Mission League: H-W, Chaminade,
and Loyola Win--(January 25, 1998)

Here are the results from Friday and Saturday's games in the Mission League.

Harvard-Westlake 70, Crespi 69

Sophomore Russell Lakey made a 15-foot shot with 14 seconds left to give Harvard-Westlake High a 70-69 victory over Crespi in a Mission League boys' basketball game Saturday night at Harvard-Westlake. Lakey finished with 15 points for the Wolverines, who are now 15-4, and 4-2 in league, trailing now behind undefeated Chaminade and Loyola. For Crespi Pat Casella scored 21 points. Crespi is now 9-10 overall and 3-3 in league play.

For H-W, John Karavas had 11 points, Todd Kurihawa had 2, Alex Minn had 11, Eric Geffner had a good night with 9 points, Chad Garson hit for 3, Anthony Naylor knocked down 6 points, while big men Pat Biggerstaff and Alex Holmes finished with 7 and 6 points respectively.

For Crespi, the scoring was led by Cassella with 21, Tibbets with 12, Jagoda with 15. Others included Owings with 3, H. Johnson 4, J. Johnson 2, McDonough with 2, Bird with 2, Muller with 2, and Spratt with 6.

Crespi jumped out to an 18-16 lead to close the first quarter, then the two teams played dead-even at 19-19 in the second quarter, and Crespi led by 2 at the half, 37-35. In the third, H-W managed to tie it up by outscoring Crespi 13-11. H-W nailed the win by outscoring the Friars 22-21 in the fourth quarter.

And finally, it appears that Victor Munoz is in fact out for the season, with an ACL. He will undergo surgery later this week. Jerry Rice notwithstanding, the recovery period for this operation will put Victor out beyond the playoffs. We do continue to look forward to seeing this great McDonald's All-American nominee in college, preferably an Ivy League school like Columbia, Penn or Princeton, any one of which would greatly benefit from a point guard of Victor's abilities. Get well soon, Victor, we'll miss you.

Chaminade 70, St. Francis 58

Saturday Night: Justin Beach had 30 points and 12 rebounds, and Justin Stewart added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the top-ranked Eagles, who are now 17-1 for the season and 6-0 in league play. The Mission League game was played at St. Francis, which dropped to 8-8 overall and 2-3 in Mission League with the loss. Chaminade took a 20-3 lead after one quarter when St. Francis shot only one for 16 from the field. Richard Fields warmed up after that, hitting seven three-point shots, and finished with 32 points for the Golden Knights who lost anyway.

Loyola 52, Notre Dame 46

Loyola remained in sole possession of second place in Mission League play with this win, and is now 5-1 in league, while Notre Dame drops to 1-4 in league and 8-10 overall. Neither Loyola nor Notre Dame had any player with more than 10 points, and in fact, only Williams of ND had exactly 10.

St. Francis 76, Alemany 57

This was a Friday night game. Richard Fields had 36 points and 13 assists for the Golden Knights (8-7, 2-2) at Alemany.
