The California
McDonald's All-American Nominees--(January 30, 1998)
SoCalHoops has got something for you that we know nobody else has published yet: The Official List of California Nominees for the McDonald's High School All-American Team.
This list is official, and came directly from the nominating committee's offices. How did we get it? We called them and asked for it. They were more than happy to oblige when we told them all we wanted was the California list, not the entire country. Even so, it consisted of 20 faxed pages. Amazing what you can get if you just ask.
We've taken the listings, and broken them down by region (SoCal and NorCal), by school, and by the numbers of nominees per school, and finally, a composite, alphabetical listing. The majority of the nominees, as you'll see are from SoCal, and Westchester has the distinction of being the only school in California with five nominees; there are a number of other schools with four nominees, including Compton, Dominguez, and Ocean View in SoCal, and St. Joseph-Notre Dame in Alameda in NorCal.
Remember, these are only the California players who have been nominated. There have been more than 1,500 nominees from around the country this year, and ultimately the selection committee will narrow it to 28 selections, who will be chosen to play in the 21st Annual McDonald's All-American High School Basketball in Norfolk, Virginia.
We at SoCalHoops have some opinions about who we think will make it from the California list, and we're sure you do too. But we'll keep our hunches to ourselves until March, when the final announcements will be made. Until then, here are all of the California nominees to the 1998 McDonald's All-American High School Basketball Team.
