Western League Roundup: UC No Fluke
By Pat McKinney
After a close 55-53 loss to USDHS on Tuesday, University City proved they are a force to be reckoned with in the Western League with a 61-48 victory over 7th ranked St. Augustine. Devin Shea led four UC players in double figures with 15 points. Carlos Vazquez put in 14 while Ian Dempster and Ashante Levette scored 11 each in the win. Jamaal Williams led Saints with 18 and Terrence Terrell added 11 in the loss. Saints led 28-23 at the half before UC outscored Saints 20-12 in the third and 18-8 in the fourth to take the game. The loss sends Saints reeling and makes it virtually impossible for them to contend for the Western title. Here are the standings after this week:
League Overall W L W L USDHS 5 0 12 4 Lincoln 4 1 11 4 University City 3 2 11 6 Scripps Ranch 3 2 11 7 St Augustine 2 3 11 7 Mission Bay 1 5 2 11 La Jolla 0 5 4 10
St Augustine falls to fifth in the Western League and it will be no surprise if they fall out of the top 10 next week. Lincoln could still claim a share of the title if they win out. Of course, there is a lot of basketball to be player and both UC and Scripps remain sleepers.
