McKinney: USDHS Gets Well
Against Mission Bay--(January 24, 1998)
Thanks again to Pat McKinney over at the University of San Diego High School Don's website, we'd like to share with you, his take on Uni's win over Mission Bay from Friday night, January 23, 1998. Pat is doing a great job of spreading the word about this fine young team, and we want to help him spread the word about this team, and urge any of you in the San Diego area to get out and watch the Dons. Again, you'll notice that this article has a decidedly "Uni" flavor to it, but then the source is just a bit biased, so you'll understand. But we do want to compliment Pat on his great stat keeping, a truly amazing feat just to get all the stats and then code them in. We don't even want to think about what it might mean if he's doing them himself. . . Anyway here is his great report, which can also be found over at the Don's site via the link above:

After a tough 64-55 loss to Compton Monday in the Martin Luther King Classic at UCLA and a narrow 55-53 escape from league foe University City on Tuesday, the University of San Diego High School Dons hoped to get well against Mission Bay (2-10 overall, 1-4 in league). They would have Luke Walton back from injury and Ronnie McMillan for the entire game. While Luke still did not look 100%, his offensive power was enough to overcome Mission Bay.
The problem with USDHS of late is that they just haven't looked hungry for victories lately. Perhaps they are looking ahead but the team rarely displays the fire past Uni teams have shown. The game opened up in this fashion, Mission Bay taking a 7-0 lead in the first 3 minutes. The Dons opened the game 0 for 5 before Chris Walton threw down a dunk to get Uni on the board. Cousin Kam Walton threw down another dunk with 2:30 left and Uni fought back to tie it a 9 by the end of the first. Uni shot 21% in the first and, while Mission Bay opened pretty well, they finished the quarter at 33%.
At the beginning of the second quarter, Uni really started to click. They opened 6-0 to push it to 15-9 with 4:45 left. Point guard David Abramowitz had some sweet looks inside to McMillan and Walton. More than that, the defense came alive, forcing 9 Mission Bay turnovers in the period. Uni would extend their lead to 21-11 with three and a half left and finsihed the half up 30-19. They put the game away in this quarter, despite only shooting 40% for the half. McMillan led with 8 points and Luke followed with 7. Abramowitz scored 5 in the first to go with 4 assists.
USDHS really looked alive in the second half as Luke began to look as aggressive as he did in the beginning of the season. He clearly doesn't have complete mobility yet and he had some difficulty making quick cuts on defense, but he is still an incredibly strong player. He opened the second half with a 3 and Mission Bay answered with a 2. Abramowitz drained a 15 footer and Uni got the ball back and Luke scored. Another Uni steal, this time with Walton on a 1 on 1 breakaway. He went for the slam and came up empty, the ankle not feeling right. Mission Bay answered with a 3 but Uni scored 5 quick points, the last on a three by Carlos Cong to put the game out of reach at 40-26.
In the final quarter, Pavle Novakovic came in to score 4 quick points in 2 minutes for the Dons. After a nice steal and scoring drive, Pavle went down with an apparent knee injury. We'll see how serious it is. In other news, Christian Trapp has left the team to return to his home country and will not reutrn. If USDHS loses Novakovic, the team will be down to 9 and we can look for Mike Stockalper to be promoted from the JV.
Luke led four Dons in double figures with 18 points, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. McMillan scored 14 and blocked 3 shots. Abramowitz displayed his outstanding passing and ball-handling ability with 9 assists to go with 12 points. Conor Hulburt came up big again with 10 and Kam led the Dons on the boards with 7. Chris Walton is starting to get into game shape and showing his smooth scoring ability with 9 points.
Mission Bay wound up with no one in double figures, but Juan Idano and Jermaine Hardage scored 8 each. Josh Brooks pulled down 8 rebounds to go with his 7 points. Here's a look at the scoring by quarters:
