Southern Section: Marmonte
League; Ruben Douglas Too--(January 29, 1998)

There were several games in the Valley and Ventura areas in Southern Section. But once again, one of the most prominent games was played by Bell-Jeff. This time the team won, and they managed to do it behind Ruben Douglas, the scoring leader in the area, who is averaging about 32 points a game. Yesterday he improved his average greatly, hitting for 40 points. Here are the highlights of these games, most of which were played in the Marmonte League, and one in the Santa Fe League:

SANTA FE LEAGUE

Bell-Jeff 68, Cathedral 63

Ruben Douglas scored 24 of his 40 points in the fourth quarter for the Guards (13-11, 5-3) in a Santa Fe League game at Bell-Jeff.

La Salle 87, St. Genevieve 49

We were unable to get any details of this game, but at least we got the line score.

MARMONTE LEAGUE GAMES

Newbury Park 81, Agoura 66

Robert Congelliere scored 23points and Daniel Bobik added 21 for the Panthers (18-4, 9-0) in a Marmonte League game at Agoura. Garrett Lepisto scored 21 for Agoura (10-9, 4-5) and Marcus Helfman added 17 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Simi Valley 91, Channel Islands 75

Rafael Berumen had 25 points and 15 rebounds for the Pioneers in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands. Brett Michel scored 19 points for Simi Valley (19-3, 8-1). O.J. Thomas had 19 points for Channel Islands (15-4, 6-3). Simi Valley hit 10 3-pointers to spark the outside attack, and just outgunned the under-manned Channel Islands team. Brett Michel led the 3-point attack, hitting 4 of 9 from beyond the arc as part of a 20-point effort. Simi Valley hit 10 of its 21 3-pointers and overall was 37 of 62 (60 percent) from the field. Channel Islands, always outsized with no player over 6-foot-2, just couldn't really compete effectively against the much larger Pioneers. And the Raiders were without three starters: Dwight Sattiewhite and Paul Blair, who are ill, and Franklyn McKesson, who sat out after missing practice Tuesday because of transportation problems. But freshmen Jonathan Monette and Manuel Berrelleza responded well anyway. They weren't intimidated at all by being out there without 45 points in the starting lineup. Monette scored 14 points, Berrelleza had 11 and junior Russell Patton, also inserted into the starting lineup, and 10 points.

All five Channel Islands starters reached double figures, with O.J. Thomas scoring 19 points (along with 10 assists and six rebounds) and Julius Samuel scoring 13. Channel Islands stayed close for much of the first half, played at a breakneck pace. But Simi Valley finished the second quarter with a 19-7 run over the final 4:13 to lead 48-31 at halftime, hitting 7 of 10 shots during that span. Berumen scored eight of those points. Channel Islands would never get closer than 14 points the remainder of the game. Ian Boys added 16 points and Fullove had 15 for Simi Valley.

Thousand Oaks 59, Westlake 57

Bas Van Rhee had 16 points and 20 rebounds for the Lancers (7-13, 4-5) in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.

Camarillo 63, Royal 61

Jeff Stuteville had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Scorpions (7-12, 1-8) in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.
