Revisited: LB Poly vs.
LB Jordan--(January 31, 1998)
The Long Beach Press-Telegram no longer archives it's sports stories. So they're up for a day, and then they're gone. We came across this report of last Wednesday's game between Long Beach Poly (Ricky Anderson, Mike McIntyre, Wesley Stokes, et. al) and Long Beach Jordan, and since it's now gone from the LB Press-Telegram's site, thought we'd pass it along to you. We weren't able to go to this one, so this is really the only way to report it to you. Here's the article;
Mike McIntyre rediscovered a couple of things Wednesday night in Poly High's 76-55 Moore League victory over visiting Jordan. The first was a successful jump shot, which had been missing the past couple of weeks. The second rediscovery? "My confidence," said McIntyre, a 6-foot-3 Poly senior.
Actually, it was the jump shooting which restored the confidence. And both of those things helped Poly secure its fourth league victory in five games and kept the Jackrabbits (17-5) a game behind first place Compton.
Poly's Shelton Diggs made one of two free throws on the Jackrabbits' first possession and then McIntyre took over. McIntyre hit a 10-footer, a 15-footer, a 3-pointer from the right wing and two free throws to give Poly a 10-0 lead three minutes into the game.
By the time the first quarter ended, McIntyre had 17 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the field, including 3 of 4 outside the 3-point stripe, and 2 for 2 from the line and Poly enjoyed a 25-11 lead.
"I've been working on my shot at practice, after practice, all the time," said McIntyre, who scored 22 points before halftime and 24 overall. "I've been going to the park to work on my form. I think I found the problem."
Jordan, which trailed, 44-27, at halftime, did a good job of slowing McIntyre down in the second half, limiting the Poly sharpshooter to only one shot. But that's when Poly point guard Wesley Stokes took over. Stokes, a 5-foot-8 sophomore, had 12 of his 18 points after halftime, including a pair of 3-pointers, to keep the Jackrabbits safely in front. Jordan, which received 20 points (including four 3-pointers) from Craig Calloway and 12 points from Darren Peterson, managed to get within 14 points a couple of times, but could get no closer. Poly's Ricky Anderson was dominant on the boards, grabbing 14 rebounds to go with his 11 points and Shea Anderson had nine points and four rebounds.
"We have a couple of big games (later) in the week," McIntyre said of a league matchup with Millikan on Friday and a non-league tussle with Artesia on Saturday. "We have to get ready for those." However, next Wednesday's rematch with Compton is certainly in the back of the Jackrabbits' minds. Compton thumped visiting Poly, 73-47, in the first meeting.
"I took myself out of that game mentally," said McIntyre, who was 0 for 7 from the field against Compton. "We'll be ready next time."
