News: CSUN's Higgins to Seek Redshirt
Following Injury--(January 2, 1998)
Thought we'd forgotten about college hoops? No way. Here's some news, though not good, from CSUN. Seems that Northridge guard Derrick Higgins has now decided to sit out the rest of the season and will apply for a medial redshirt status.
Higgins is a senior, and played in five games this season before being sidelined with a stress fracture in his right foot. He will undergo surgery next week and a metal scrw will be placed in his foot.
This is not the first time that Higgins has redshirted, and he had a medical redshirt in 1995-96 due to a stress fracture in his other foot, the left one. Bobby Braswell, the CSUN coach thinks that the chances are good that Higgins will be granted the redshirt by the NCAA.
Braswell told the LA Times "A second redshirt year because of injury happens more than people think. As long as there is documentation of surgery and he has played in fewer than six games, he can get it."
Higgins was the teams best defensive player this season, and was also averaging 10.2 ppg.
And here's the question of the year: If anyone can explain why it's called a "redshirt", we've got some great door prizes for you. Any takers?
Good luck to Derrick. We wish him a speedy recovery.
