Gahr Beats Lynwood Tuesday Night--(January 28, 1998)
Yesterday, the Gahr High Gladiators beat Lynwood 71-53 in an impressive San Gabriel Valley League Victory, which vaulted Gahr into second place in the league behind Dominguez. Gahr, which will appear this Saturday at the Pyramid in the Poly-Artesia Winter Classic, improved it's record to 14-7 overall and 4-1 in league. Lynwood fell to 13-8 overall and 2-3 in league.
Equally important was the impressive performance of sophomore Ramaan Shotwell who scored 25 points, including eight free throws. Apparently Shotwell came into the game shooting an amazing average of 96 percent from the line, having made 78 of his last 81 from the free throw line. While he hit his first eight free throws on Tuesday, Shotwell missed a couple in a row late in the game. The streak was broken, and his percentage was down only slightly (he's now 86 of 91) to a still-astounding 94 percent from the line. The good news is that by the time he missed, it didn't matter as Gahr had built an insurmountable lead.
Gahr led at the end of the first quarter 18-10, and Shotwell had seven of those points, including a 3 point shot just before the buzzer ended the quarter. While Gahr pulled ahead by an even wider margin in the second quarter, Lynwood managed to cut the lead to only 36-28 at the half with Gary Lenoir's 3-pointer before the end of the half.
In the third quarter, Gahr led by as many as 17 points, and every time Lynwood tried to bring the game back, Gahr would just pull ahead again, using a trapping zone defense and quick transition baskets to their advantage.
Besides Shotwell, other scorers for Gahr were Darrell Handy, who had 15 points, Jon Fenderson who finished with 9 points and 7 rebounds, Marques Jordan who had 7 points, Michael Williams also with 7 points, and Anthony Davis with 6 points.
The high scorer for Lynwood was Everett Williams with 19 points, but unfortunately he was the only Lynwood player in double figures. Other scorers were Lenoir, who had nine points, and Keyawn Floyd who also had 9 points and 7 rebounds.
