Santa Barbara: Shantay's Take
On Dos Pueblos' Win--(January 24, 1998)

ShanTay Legens had 12 of his game-high 37 points in the fourth quarter Friday night as the Dos Pueblos High boys' basketball team (17-2 overall, 8-0 league) overcame a 3-point deficit after three quarters to take a narrow, 80-75 Channel League win at Buena (0-8, 3-17).

Dos Pueblos made 12 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter. Buena guard Ryan Fay had 27 points, including three 3-pointers. Buena, as a team, knocked down eight 3-pointers, Dos Pueblos had five. At halftime, Buena and Dos Pueblos were tied 40-40. At the third quarter break it was 60-57 Buena. Billy Thomas had 18 points for Buena and Danny Thompson added 10. Despite the inspired performance, Buena lost its 11th straight game.

Ok, and now that you've read the more mundane "news" version of the game, here's Shantay's own take on the game:

Dos Pueblos 80, Buena 75

From Shantay Legans

I don't know what to tell you guys, except we were stronger, faster and taller than Buena and just couldn't put them away. Some guy, I think Ryan Fay was just busting our butts with 3's from the corner all night long. It was tied at halftime and they were up at the end of the 3rd quarter I think.

Our big men Alex Jenkins and Dan Hoefer just couldn't seem to get open. We played the whole first half like in slow motion. Maybe Coach Sherman should get together with San Fernando's Coach Cady and try and figure out what's going on. Everybody on the team has GOT to start foaming at the mouth and playing hard. That game shouldn't have been so hard to win. But that's what they say about all our games, maybe the other teams want it more than us.

Ryan Holbrook had 4 threes and Dave Sears played great on defense and hit a 3 at the halftime buzzer. Tafari Pipersburg isn't on the team anymore and Coach brought up Brett Holbrook, Ryan's little brother, it was only his 2nd game with us, but he is going to be a player. My job is to get the team involved, but when they're not clicking I gotta do something. I've never had to score to win like I did in this game. I couldn't stand to lose this game so when the going gets tough the tough get going. I had 37 points (13 free throws) 8 assists and 6 steals. I'm over the flu, but still have a cough that's hanging on.

Gotta rest up and practice hard for the San Marcos game Wednesday.

Shantay.

There now, wasn't that better? We think so.
