CIF Southern Section Polls:
SoCal Girls' Basketball--(January 16, 1998)

Ok, so we've ignored girls' high school hoops for about as long as we possibly can. Well, we've had an article here and there, but nothing compared to the coverage of boys' hoops. Just to give a little equality (this is MLK weekend after all), so here's the latest CIF Southern Section poll of Girls' teams. And as we reminded everyone with the Boys' team polls, we really don't place too much credence in polls, since these are just the coaches voting on teams they may or may not have played or even seen this year. Compare this poll to the boys, and you'll be surprised how many of the same schools are ranked in their divisions. Coincidence? We think not. Political? Maybe. Good teams in both boys and girls? Definitely.

Of course, what is missing from these polls, and what makes them truly not representative of whether these are truly the "best" teams in the particular geographical region which comprises SoCal, is that they exclude the 60 or so LA City Section High Schools (120 teams counting both boys and girls), and the entire San Diego Section of CIF (both San Diego City and Non-City Section)--which is another 84 schools--that's 168 teams of boys and girls.

But this is as good as it gets for now. And that's not bad. So there.
