Channel
League: Other
Games From Wednesday--(January 23, 1998)
In addition to the Miracle of Dos Pueblos on Wednesday, January 21, 1998, there were a few other important Channel League games being played. Here are some highlights from our correspondents in the area.
Bishop Diego 52, Carpinteria 45
Bishop Diego found itself in archrival Carpinteria's gym on Wednesday night for a Tri-Valley League basketball game - and trailing 41-37 in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals didn't worry, though. They were in their comfort zone, because they consider this gym their second home. Bishop scored the next seven points and went on to win 52-45 for its fifth straight win at Carpinteria over the last three years.
Joe Lammers certainly felt right at home, and he had five points and five rebounds in the last four minutes. He finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds as Bishop improved to 2-0 in league and 13-4 overall. Carpinteria dropped to 2-1 and 9-7.
Carpinteria trailed most of the game, relying almost exclusively on three-point shots, making 29 attempts for the game, to stay within range. They were rarely able to penetrate the lane. When they tried to go inside, they would almost routinely get their shots blocked, and they just weren't getting any calls from the refs. So they were forced to go long, and finally, in the third quarter, they started connecting on the treys. Chris Redfield hit three 3-pointers and Ben Scott hit another as Carpinteria rallied from a 27-19 deficit to trail 37-35 going into the final quarter.
Redfield hit two free throws and Shawn Godkin and Scott followed with short jumpers to put Carpinteria ahead 41-37 with 5:43 to play. Bishop coach John Ward called a timeout, to remind his team that there were still five minutes to play BD responded by getting the ball to Mike Burich inside who managed to hit Christian Rovsek and the 6-5 senior split two defenders for a layup. Rovsek, who had 14 points and 10 boards, got a rebound at the other end and Lammers was fouled, hitting a free throw. Rovsek then got an offensive rebound on BD's next time down the floor, and was fouled, making both free throws to put Bishop ahead 42-41. Lammers added a rebound basket with 2:39 to play to conclude a 7-0 run. Scott managed to score for Carpinteria on an assist from Tony Parra. But Rovsek answered with two more free throws. Rovsek, has been making 75% of his free throws in the last four games, so he wasn't really the player Carpinteria wanted to foul. A blocked shot by Burich was followed by a basket inside by Lammers before Scott made it 48-45 with a driving shot. That was as close as Carpinteria could get, however. Bishop calmly protected its lead by rebounding the Warriors' missed 3-pointers and making 2-of-4 free throws in the final 45 seconds. Scott led Carpinteria with 14 points and also had five rebounds. Redfield had 11 points and teammed with Tyler Matson to keep Rovsek from breaking loose inside. Matson, only 6-1, had no points but 10 rebounds.
Hueneme 67, Buena 65
Johnnie Williams hit a 15-foot jump shot with one second remaining to lift visiting Hueneme to a dramatic victory. Hueneme. Hueneme is now 2-5 in league play and 6-10 overall. Hueneme trailed by 16 points in the third period before launching a stunning rally. Robbins Collins had 21 points and Carlos Bailey scored all 14 of his points in the fourth period for Hueneme. Ryan Fay led Buena, which is currently winless in league at 0-7 and is only 3-16 on the year. Fay had 24 points, including six 3-pointers. It's a shame someone can't help him out because even with this team's dismal record, Fay is still one of the area's leading scoring threats and currently a scoring stat leader.
Santa Barbara 68, Ventura 56
JR. Allen scored a career-high 22 points to lead four other teammates in double figures as the Dons picked up a key Channel Lelague win on the road. Allen shot 9-for-17 from the field and was joined in double figures by Tony Freeman (15), Craig Christ (11), Johnny Ortiz (10) and Sean Kelley (10). Santa Barbara got great efforts from all five starters. Allen added nine rebounds and four blocked shots, Ortiz led with seven assists and four steals, Kelley led with 13 rebounds and added two assists, and Freeman had five rebounds, two assists and four steals.
The Dons are 4-3 in league and 11-8 overall. Jeff Staniland scored 22 points for Ventura, which dropped to 5-13 overall and 2-5 in League. For Santa Barbara the scoring was Ortiz with 10, including Santa Barbara's only three pointer, Freeman 15, Christ 11, Allen 22, and Kelley 10 points. For Ventura the scorers were Ellis with a three pointer, Stanland 22 including one three, Pabst 1, Robinson 7, Asky 7 including a three, Ostic 6, Weaver 2, Peterson 6 both on three point shots, and Derse with 2 points.
