News: Bennem
Commits to UCI--(January 20, 1998)
The Los
Angeles Times Orange County Edition is reporting today that
Zamiro Bennem (6'-3" Sr. PG) from Magnolia High in Orange,
has orally committed to UC Irvine. The story, written by Times
staff writer Paul McLeod, reported that Magnolia boys' basketball
Coach Al Walin confirmed Bennem's committment on Monday, January
19, 1998. Bennem, a left-hander, is averaging 21.7 points and 4.8
assists for the Sentinels, who are now 15-3 on the season. Bennem
scored 34 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds in Magnolia's 79-70
Orange League victory over then third-ranked Brea Olinda last
week.
The Times
story reports also that Bennem informed Irvine Coach Pat Douglass
of his decision Sunday evening, according to Walin. We haven't
spoken with Zamiro to confirm the report, but if it's true, the
Anteaters can only improve. And Bennem will get a fine education
in the process. Congratulations to Zamiro Bennem and to UCI. Now
bring on that National Letter of Intent.
