LA Times Overall Top 10: What's
Up Tonight--(February 20, 1998)

The LA Times somewhat irregularly publishes their overall top 10 list. This is not one of the "regional" polls of either the San Fernando Valley, Ventura, or Orange County only team polls that we feature here from time to time. Nope, this is the big deal, the entire SoCal area (well, almost--it doesn't really extend into the Inland Emprie or down to San Diego, but it's still a pretty wide coverage area). Here's the poll which was published yesterday, January 19, 1998 with some notes about who's doing what and who's playing who in the first rounds of playoffs which open up tonight in both City Section and Southern Section.

1. COMPTON DOMINGUEZ (20-4) * Top-ranked Dons open II-A playoffs against Los Altos.

2. WESTCHESTER (22-3) * Comets, ranked second in state, begin City 4-A playoffs against Locke.

3. LAKEWOOD ARTESIA (25-1) * Pioneers play Fountain Valley or Crescenta Valley in I-AA opener.

4. LONG BEACH POLY (21-6) * Jackrabbits open defense of I-AA title against Bell Gardens.

5. CRENSHAW (17-3) * Cougars start quest for sixth straight City 4-A title against Grant.

6. FREMONT ( 25-4) * Pathfinders start getting tested in City 4-A opener against Gardena.

7. GLENDORA (25-1) * Top-seeded Tartans open I-A playoffs against Keppel.

8. COMPTON ( 25-5) * Top-seeded Tarbabes play Canyon or Los Amigos in II-AA opener.

9. REDONDO UNION ( 24-2) * Seahawks meet Savanna in first round of II-A playoffs.

10. WEST HILLS CHAMINADE ( 23-1) * Top-seeded Eagles play Pasadena Blair in III-A playoff opener.

Others receiving consideration: Ocean View, Etiwanda, Perris.
