Southern Section: Final Scores & Highlights
Before Playoff Pairings--(February 14, 1998)

Last night's games were, with a few exceptions, the final games in regular league before the playoff pairings are announced. There were few surprises. The most notable accomplishment this season was Newbury Park's complete sweep in Marmonte League. NP was a team which everyone thought was good, but not good enough to take the league, given all the pub which Simi was getting. But just to prove rep is nothing and game is everything, NP won every game, while Simi dropped two, both to NP. And NP just kept on winning, as last night Daniel Bobik scored 32 points, had 8 boards and six assists. Simi won last night also, just hammering Royal, even without Rafael Berumen who was resting an injury before the playoffs. Chaminade continued it's sweep of Mission league, while Harvard-Westlake assured itself of a playoff spot.

And in some late-breaking news in the Channel League: Oxnard wins coin flip: Oxnard (16-8, 10-4) won a coin flip to be the league's No. 2 seed when the CIF-Southern Section playoffs pairings are announced. San Marcos (19-6, 10-4) will be the third-place representative.

And as always we've included Orange County in it's own report.

Poly managed to win even though Ricky Anderson didn't play, and with the win, Poly and Compton are the co-champions of the league as both teams finished with 9-1 records. Poly was 22-6 overall. It's likely that Poly will be seeded No. 2 when the Division I-AA playoff pairings are released tomorrow morning by the Southern Section office. Actually, Poly coach Rod Palmer is probably hoping that his team is seeded No. 2, because if it is, they won't meet the probably No. 1 seed, Artesia, until the Divisional Finals on March 7 at the Pond.

NORTHERN LEAGUE

Lompoc 66, San Luis Obispo 53

Perhaps the fate of San Luis Obispo High in Friday's Northern League boys basketball championship was determined not in the game itself but a day before. The Tigers' third-leading scorer, Doug Pazdan, rolled his ankle in Thursday's practice and did not play in the title game at James Gym. Lompoc took the NL championship 66-53 behind solid first half play. The Braves held a 17-10 edge in the first quarter and led 34-21 at halftime. Lompoc jumped out to 17-5 lead before the Tigers were able to end the initial quarter with a 5-0 run. Brave Shadeed Salim scored his team's first six points but finished with just seven. The other driving force behind the Lompoc rush was Roland Jones' streaky three-point shooting. Jones buried three triples in the first half and none in the second, wrapping the game up with 13 points. San Luis Obispo was able to run with the Braves after the break, allowing just two more points than it scored. Jonathan Sales led the Tigers with 17 points but it was the hot fourth-quarter shooting of Dan D'Entremont that kept the Lompoc from sprinting away with it. D'Entremont tallied all of his 10 points in the final period, including two three-pointers. San Luis Obispo shot just 16-of-26 free throws. The Braves' biggest lead came early in the second half when two straight three-pointers allowed the team a 55-37 lead. San Luis Obispo pulled within 15 by the end of the third and trailed by just 12 with nearly a minute and a half remaining, but the outcome was sealed. Dustin Reese was second in Tiger scoring with 11 while Travis Burkett and Jason d'Autremont added seven apiece. Despite the loss, the year is not over for the Tigers, who next week begin CIF-Southern Section play. Pazdan may return for the playoffs.

In the consolation contest, Santa Maria was a 66-53 winner over Arroyo Grande. The Saints were led by the 22 points of Jason Johnson and 11 of Mike Gonzales.
