Southern Section Report: Highlights
From Wednesday (No Orange County)--(February 12, 1998)

So what's the really big news in the Southern Section from Wednesday's games? How about Ruben Douglas finally going just absolutely insane and scoring 51 points in a game against Mary Star. The entire Bell-Jeff team only scored 72 points, which means they only got 21 points of production from about 10 other players. Or how about Russell Lakey, the super sophomore, scoring 39 points for Harvard-Westlake. And how about Simi losing yet again this season, it's third league loss, and now there's no way they'll even take a share of the league title. Anyway, here are the highlights and scores from Wednesday. Our Orange County article for Wednesday's games is posted separately.

Baseline League

Glendora 90, Chino 51

Casey Jacobsen scored 28 points and Chris Clark added 26 to lead Glendora (24-1, 9-0) to a 90-51 victory over Chino (4-20, 1-8) in a Baseline League game. Clay Powell scored 16 points and Kevin Eldridge had 13 for the Cowboys.

Ayala 60, Nogales 31

Ayala (20-5, 8-1) got its sixth consecutive 20-win season with a 60-31 rout of La Puente Nogales (11-14, 4-5). Jack May led the Bulldogs' balanced scoring with 10 points and 10 rebounds; Daniel Sherman added eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Camino Real League

Bosco Tech 60, St. Monica 47

Paul Viramontes scored a team-high 15 points and Felipe Salazar had another 12 to lead the Tigers. The win moved Bosco into third place and improved its record to 13-13 overall and 4-4 in league.

St. Anthony 79, Cantewell-Sacred Heart 52

Joe Luyben scored 19 points and Jared Lloyd had another 17 as the Saints who improved to 19-6 overall and 5-3 in league played great man-to-man defense which created numerous turnovers that led to easy baskets in their victory over the hos Cardinls, who remained winless in league at 0-8.

Channel League

Oxnard 60, Dos Pueblos 57

Shantay Legans scored 17 points while Dan Hoefer had 15, and Jenkins had another 14 for Dos Pueblos in the losing effort. This marks the second straight loss for Dos Pueblos, which is 21-4 overall and 12-2 in league play Tafoya had 16 and Fouchey had 13 for Oxnard.

Hueneme 56, Buena 50

Ryan Fay of Buena had 25 points to lead all scorers, but it wasn't enough as Buena fell, dropping it's recored to 4-21 overall and 1-12 in league. Hueneme, led by Bailey with 20, improved to 9-14 overall and 5-9 in league.

Del Rey League

St. John Bosco 59, St. Paul 56

Justin trott stole a pass with 15 seconds remaining in the game and psssed to Larry Dela Torre who scored on a layup to seal the victory for the Braves who are now 11-14 and 4-5 in league, and who finished in third place.

Delphic League

Campbell Hall 54, Brentwood 52

Josh Glass scored 21 points and had 12 assists, while Woodard had 15 points and 10 rebounds, as Campbell Hall improved to 15-6 overall and 4-3 in league. Brentwood was led by D. Bradley with 17 and Miller with 12.

Whitney 76, Faith Baptist 61

Whitney was led by Thompson with 14 while Kim had 10.FB was led by Grasu with 15 points and 10 boards. FB remains at only 4-18 overall and they are winless at 0-9 in league.

Fronteir League

Moorpark 85, Calabasas 66

Moorpark's Donahue had 31 points, while Lawrence had 31 points and 10 rebounds. Tomilinson also had 10 points, while for Calabasas Ghoreishi had 24, and Jason Miller had 16 points. Moorpark improved to 19-6 overall and is 6-2 in league; Calabasas remains at 3-6 in league.

Heritage League

Ribet Academy 83, First Lutheran 50

Ribet was led by Sarkassian with 22, while First Lugheran was led by Quinn with 13. FL's record is only 2-12 overall and they remain winless in league at 0-9.

Liberty League

Providence 56, Viewpoint 50

Tyler Stone had 13 points while Nick McKay had 11 and Dan Roy had 12 for Viewpoint, which dropped to 8-11 overall and 3-9 in league. Shant Bekmezian had 11, Apollo Kacsinta had 12, and Dickran Tashdjian had 10. Derek Jones also scored 12 for Providence which improved to 12-9 overall and 7-6 in league.

Holy Martyrs 62, Buckley 54

Buckley just never reacted to Holy Martyrs outside shooting, as the Armens (6-5 in league) shot 8 three-pointers, some from way out on the perimeter. Buckley stayed in a 2-3 zone throughout the game. Adam Pastor had 8 points and played the last quarter of the game with 4 fouls. Buckley is also at 6-5 in league.

Marmonte League

Agoura 70, Simi Valley 69

My how the mighty are fallen. Garrett Lepisto scored a rebound basket at the buzzer to give Agoura High a 70-69 boys' basketball victory over Simi Valley in a Marmonte League game Wednesday night at Simi Valley. Lepisto, who had 22 points, scored the final seven points of the game to lead the Chargers (13-10, 7-6 in league play). Lepisto's three-point shot made it 69-66 and he connected for two with six seconds left. Marcus Helfman stole Shaun Michel's inbounds pass and got the ball to Mike Patterson, who missed a shot from the lane. Lepisto tipped in the rebound as time expired. It was the second consecutive loss at home for the Pioneers (21-5, 10-3), who began the season as the top-ranked team in The Times' regional poll.

Newbury Park 85, Camarillo 60

Daniel Bobik had 19 points and eight steals to help the Panthers (22-4, 13-0) clinch their first outright Marmonte League title since 1981. Bobik also had 5 assists, while little brother Brian had 9 points 4 steals and 4 assists. Mike Meru also scored 16 points for the Panthers. Jeff Stuteville had 28 points for Camarillo in the loss.

Thousand Oaks 76, Royal 72 (OT)

Jason Dixon scored 16 points for Thousand Oaks, as the Lancers beat Royal. Dusty Cruz had 14 points, Chris Bader 11, and Cam Dickson had 15 for Royal. Thousand Oaks improved to 8-15 overall and 5-7 in league, while Royal dropped to 6-19 and 2-11.

Westlake 65, Channel Islands 51

Westlake, which imp9roved to 12-11 overall and 5-8 in league was led by Joey Cuppari with 18, De Gennaro with 12, Howard 19, and Jacques 7. Channel Iwslands, which has a far better record, dropped to 17-6 overall and 8-5 in league.

Mission League

Chaminade 63, Loyola 51

Chaminade High won its first league title in 11 years yesterday as they got 25 points from Scott Long on his 18th birthday, beating Loyola, 63-51, Wednesday at Chaminade. While Chaminade hadn't won a title since winning the Santa Fe League in 1987, Loyola certainly didn't make it easy on the Eagles (22-1, 11-0), The consensus Valley Region No. 1 team (SoCalHoops, LA Times & Daily News) Chaminade has now won 19 consecutive games. Matt Mora's short jumper got Loyola (18-7, 9-2) within a point, 48-47, with five minutes remaining. It was the fourth one-point lead of the second half for Chaminade, which closed out the game with a 15-4 run. Chaminade forced eight Loyola turnovers and outrebounded the Cubs, 10-2, in the fourth quarter. Six different Eagles had a rebound in the fourth period. Chaminade, which used a 2-3 zone against the Cubs three weeks ago in a 19-point victory, switched to man-to-man for the second meeting. In a game that was tied four times in the first, Loyola took its only lead of the game, 16-15, on the first basket of the second period on a layup by Gordon Hallman after a steal at midcourt. A short jumper by Long gave Chaminade back the lead for good and the Eagles built a seven-point lead twice and led, 29-24, at halftime. Loyola, kept alive by the sharp shooting of Robert Archer, who finished with 20 points, pulled within a point early and late in the third period and trailed, 41-40, after three. Harvard-Westlake 91, Notre Dame 84

Russell Lakey scored nine of his 39 points in overtime, and the Wolverines (18-7, 6-5) rallied to win a Mission League game at Harvard-Westlake. zJohn Karravas only had 4 points and suffered from a turnover at the end of the game. John Terzian scored 1 points, Alex Minn had 11, while Ike Udeze had 2, Eric Geffner 2, John Wang 3, Anthony Naylor 3, Pat Biggerstaff 7, Alex Holmes had 19 points and 10 boards. For Notre Dame Donte Ward had 20 points, Pearson had 14, Williams 17, and Donnelly 10.

Moore League

Compton 72, Lakewood 48

An 18-6 run to open the third quarter propelled the Tarbabes who are now 22-5, overall and 8-1 in leauge to a victory over the visiting Lancers, who dropped to 9-16 overall and 3-6 in league. David Hamilton (6'-9" Sr. C) who is headed to Auburn, paced the Tarbabes with 16 points, 15 boards and 3 blocked shots. Ray Ross also added 121 points and 8 rebounds, while Tito Maddox scored 10 points off the bench. Lionel Benjamine had 15 points for Lakewood.

Jordan 82, Millikan 50

The Panthers (16-10, 6-3), used a 26-5 first quarter run to dominate the visiting rams. Jurnior forward Darren Peterson led Jordan with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Eric Gathrite had 12 points and Tryvon Bryant and Rashad Benjamin each had another 10 for Jordan.

Poly 86, Wilson 62

Ricky Anderson did not play, but the Jackrabbits still managed to sin, and improved to 21-6 overall and 8-1, while Wilson dropped to 5-19 on the season, and 1-8 in league. Mike McIntyre had 16 points, while Wesley stokes had 11, and Keyon Cooley, a junior forward, scored 8 points and 5 rebounds. Jamil Lee, who came in off the bench had 17 ponts, while Marcus Sargent had 11 points. Trayon Carter scored 16 ponts and Jamal Willliams with 15, each led Wilson.

 

Prep League

Pasadena Poly 52, Flintridge Prep 35

Koko archibong scored 24 points as the Panthers broke open the game with a 143-2 advantage in the second quarter. Ryan Haden contributed 17 points for Ply, which improved to 14-8 overall and 6-2 in league. Gelan Hagen led Flintridge Prep with 11 points. FP is out of the post season race with a record of only 2-16 overall and 1-6 in league.

Santa Fe League

La Salle 65, Cathedral 58

Brokers Aki and Albert Aquino scored 25 and 13 points respectively for La Salle.

Bell-Jeff 72, Mary Star 69

Ruben Douglas scored 51 points for the Guards (17-12, 8-4) in a Santa Fe League victory at Mary Star. Mike west had 15 points. Only two others scored for Bell-Jeff: Peter Swing had 4 points and Chris Eguia had 2. Mary Star was led by Mike Manino with 29 ponts and Andy Ruliesa with 17. Mary Star dropped to 13-11 overall and 7-5 in league.

Sierra League

Diamond Bar 68, West Covina 52

Kevin Turner hit seven 3-pointers, including two in a crucial stretch of the third quarter, as Diamond Bar (21-4, 7-2) rallied to stay alive in the Sierra League race with a 68-52 win at West Covina (1-8 in league). Turner, who finished with 24 points, and Jason Arnold, 14 points with 12 rebounds, scored eight points each in the third quarter.
