Highlights From Mon. & Tues.--(February 11, 1998)
Ok, so we're running a little behind in reporting the scores and details of some of these games. Oh, and it looks like we were wrong in our Tuesday report of the Santa Barbara game that we reported took place after the Dos Pueblos game. As you can see, it was played against Huenemen, and Santa Barbara lost. Now here are the rest as well, at least as many as we could find for you.
Monday Games--February 9, 1998
MARMONTE LEAGUE
Channel Islands 72, Thousand Oaks 60
Franklyn McKesson scored 21 points and O.J. Thomas added 17 to spark host Channel Islands (17-5, 8-4). McKesson made five three-pointers.
CONDOR LEAGUE
Villanova 51, Cornerstone Christian 38
Andy Holmquist and Eric Engh combined for 31 points to fuel Villanova (10-7, 6-3) past visiting Cornerstone Christian. Andrew Tasker scored 17 points for Cornerstone Christian. Villanova's Mike McKinney had five ball recoveries and eight assists.
Tuesday's Southern Section:
ALPHA LEAGUE
L.A. Baptist 63, Maranatha 52
Frank Vasquez had 21 points and the
Knights (9-12, 4-5) won an Alpha League game at L.A.
Baptist.
Kilpatrick 52, Village Christian 49
Aaron Wall had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Crusaders (8-13, 5-4) in an Alpha League defeat at Village Christian.
CHANNEL LEAGUE
Hueneme 70, Santa Barbara 60
Robbie Collins scored 23 points and the Vikings (8-14, 4-9) upset the Dons (15-10, 8-5) in a Channel League game at Hueneme. Hueneme rallied from a 9-0 deficit at the top of the game to pull the upset over visiting Santa Barbara which beat first-place and previously undefeated Dos Pueblos Monday night. Collins hit four 3-pointers and Dwight Norman had 11 points and five assists for Hueneme (8-14, 4-9). Santa Barbara is 15-10 overall and 8-5 in league.
DELPHIC LEAGUE
Campbell Hall 54, Brentwood 52
Josh Glass had 21 points and 12 assists, and the Vikings rallied to win a Delphic League game at Campbell Hall. Brandon Woodard had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Campbell Hall (15-6, 4-3).
Whitney 76, Faith Baptist 61
Senior Tony Boriboonratana had a season-high 16 points as the Wildcats (8-16, 3-6) crushed the host Contenders.
FOOTHILL LEAGUE
Burroughs 69, Canyon 55
Kevin Krose scored 11 of his 20 points in the first quarter and the Indians won a Foothill League game. Jeremy Cartee added 26 points for the Indians (16-9, 5-4).
Valencia 56, Saugus 40
Jerrohn Jordan scored 21 points for the Vikings in a Foothill League victory at Saugus.
Hart 80, Burbank 73
Jerry Owens scored 19 points, seven in the fourth quarter and eight in overtime, and the Indians won a Foothill League game at Burbank. J.T. Stotts scored 33 points for Hart (16-9, 7-2).
FRONTIER LEAGUE
Santa Paula 79, Malibu 60
Joe Riccio scored 22 points for the Cardinals, who clinched a share of the Frontier League championship. Moses Gasio added 13 points and 14 rebounds. Santa Paula's (19-5, 8-1) Moses Gasio, Juan Guzman and Hector Wallot scored 13 points apiece, while Gasio had 14 rebounds and Guzman made eight assists.
Moorpark 88, Calabasas 66
Keith Donahue and Kevin Lawrence each scored 31 points to lead Moorpark (19-6, 6-2) to the romp at Calabasas. Todd Tomlinson added 10 points for Moorpark, which avenged an 84-77 loss in the first meeting between the two clubs. Huton Ghoreishi led Calabasas (10-14, 3-4) with 24 points.
Nordhoff 61, Santa Clara 60
Nordhoff (11-11, 4-5) overcame a
tradition that cost them a technical foul and rallied from a 15-3
deficit to defeat visiting Santa Clara (3-6). Nordhoff coach Jim
Hall said his team always throws toilet paper on the floor after
his team scores its first points against Santa Clara. Hall said
normally his team takes a delay of game call by the officials.
Nordhoff was hit by a technical and coach Hall was slapped with a
technical too. Andy Flores finished with 21 points and eight
rebounds to power Nordhoff's come-from-behind win. Chris
Christoffersen had 17 points, 10 rebounds and 11 blocks, and
Etienne Emanuel made 11 points and seven assists. B.J. Ward had
24 points for Santa Clara, including a 3-pointer at
the buzzer. Scott Sorich scored 15 and Ryan McGill added 11.
Moorpark 85, Calabasas 66
Kevin Lawrence and Keith Donahue scored all but 23 of the Musketeers' points in a Frontier League victory at Calabasas Lawrence had 31 points and 10 rebounds, and Donahue had 31 points and seven rebounds for the Musketeers (19-6, 6-2).
GOLDEN LEAGUE
Antelope Valley 72, Highland 60
Matt Parm had 28 points and 10 assists for the Antelopes, who clinched their second consecutive Golden League title at Highland. Josh Speakes added 19 points and 10 rebounds for Antelope Valley (17-8, 7-2).
Palmdale 69, Littlerock 56
Kerry Yates scored 19 points and the Falcons (15-9, 6-3) won a Golden League game at Littlerock.
HERITAGE LEAGUE
Grace Brethren 68, L.A. Lutheran 56
Robert Serra had 18 points, eight rebounds and five steals to lead Grace Brethren (13-7, 4-5) at home. John Durso added 17 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Tyson Larson added eight assists.
HIGH DESERT LEAGUE
Mojave 66, Paraclete 65
Adam Witte hit a three-pointer as time expired to give host Mojave a High Desert League victory. Peter Cich had 20 points and six rebounds for Paraclete (5-15, 3-6), and Josh Foster contributed 17 points and nine rebounds. Kenny Johnson scored 19 points, David Johnson added 14 points, while Witte finished with 11 for Mojave.
MISSION LEAGUE
St. Francis 66, Alemany 58
Richard Fields scored 18 points, Shaun Scranton added 16, Derek La Velle had 14 and Chenier Johnson scored 12 for the Golden Knights in a Mission League victory at St. Francis.
OCEAN LEAGUE
Centennial 70, South Torrance 53
Senior forward Brian Johnson had 10 of his 24 points in the decisive third quarter as the Apaches (18-7, 9-4) beat the host Spartans.
OLYMPIC LEAGUE
Valley Christian 75, Ontario Christian 61
Erick Streelman had 23 points and 11 rebounds in a Crusader (11-11, 4-5) win.
PACIFIC LEAGUE
Hoover 68, Pasadena 61
Greg Russell scored six of his 10 points in the third quarter, and the Tornadoes outscored Pasadena (15-11, 6-3) by six in the quarter to take control of a Pacific League game at Hoover. Hoover and Pasadena are tied for second place behind Muir. Mark Hull had 25 points and 15 rebounds for Hoover (16-8, 6-3).
Crescenta Valley 77, Arcadia 62
Kean Mallory and Alex Tima each scored 20 points to help the Falcons win a Pacific League game at Crescenta Valley. Tima grabbed 17 rebounds for the Falcons (15-10, 5-4).
RIO HONDO LEAGUE
La Canada 83, Monrovia 70
Matt Moore of La Canada High scored a school-record 51 points and the Spartans defeated Monrovia, 83-70, in a Rio Hondo League boys' basketball game Tuesday at Monrovia. Moore, a senior center, scored 16 points in the first quarter and 17 in the fourth en route to breaking the record of 47 points set by Jeff Lord in 1989-1990. Last week, Moore broke the school's all-time scoring record.
SAN GABRIEL VALLEY LEAGUE
Dominguez 119, Paramount 31
Senior forward Tayshaun Prince led six players in double figures with 24 points, eight rebounds, six assists, three blocks and three steals as the Dons (19-4, 9-0) ran past the visiting Pirates (1-8 in league). Walter Small had17 points and 12 rebounds, Tyson Chandler had 17 points, Mike Carson had 13 points, Keith Kincade scored 13 and James Boulton finished with 12 points. Dominguez had 22 steals and shot 53 percent from the field.
Gahr 48, Downey 47
Ramaan Shotwell stole the ball with 15 seconds left in the game and passed it to Jon Fenderson who made a lay-up for the game winner as the Gladiators (16-8, 7-2) beat the visiting Vikings.
Warren 70, Lynwood 62
Brandon Valsonis poured in 18 points to lead the Bears (18-7, 4-5) over the host Knights (4-5 league). Perry Owens made 5 3-three pointers en route to a game-high 22 points to keep Lynwood close.
SUBURBAN LEAGUE
Artesia 83, Bellflower 62
Sophomore guard Andre Hazel led Artesia with 15 points, nine assists, nine rebounds and eight steals as the Pioneers (24-1, 9-0) clinched their 12th consecutive league title with a win over the host Buccaneers (20-5, 6-3). Jason Kapono had 21 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds for Artesia. Jack Martinez added 19 points. Isaac Brooks had 17 for Bellflower.
Mayfair 90, Norwalk 40
Edwin Draughan had 18 points and Josh Childress 13 as the Monsoons (16-8, 7-2) had little trouble defeating the host Lancers.` n La Mirada 85, Glenn 73: Junior guard Vaughn Jarrett had 11 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter as the Matadores (9-15, 3-6) used a big first half to down the visiting Eagles (8-16, 2-7).
