Report: The News
From Poway--(February 17, 1998)
If it wasn't for Orange Glen, Rancho Bernardo High's boys basketball team might hold sole possession of first place in the Palomar League. Instead, the Broncos are tied with Poway and Rancho Buena Vista with four league games remaining.
RB avenged an earlier 90-86 overtime loss to lowly Orange Glen with a convincing 101-63 victory last Friday. But routing the Patriots wasn't the only storyline. Rei Rivera and Marques Askins both set records during the game.
Rivera poured in 32 points to led the Broncos, and in the process became the first player in San Diego Section history to score over 2,000 points in a career while playing for only one school. Tony Clark, Jerome Green and former RB standout Jeremy Killion all scored over 2,000 points in their high school careers, but did it playing for multiple schools. Also the aforementioned players all had four years at the varsity level to accomplish the feat, Rivera did it with only three years at the varsity level. Rivera will continue to add to his total of 2,002 in the Broncos remaining four regular season games and the playoffs, as the CIFSDS record for points in a career is 2,549 set by Clark while at Valhalla and Christian from 1987-1990.
Even if the Broncos did the unthinkable and reached the Southern California Regional semifinals (the farthest any Div. I boys basketball team has ever gone), Rivera would have to average 60 points a game to get Clark's record. Nevertheless, Rivera's play of late has gotten him looks from such schools as the United States Air Force Academy, Santa Clara and Colorado.
Askins also set a new school record for steals in a single season. The Bronco point guard currently has 101 steals this season, the old record was 98.
Askins and Rivera weren't the only players to step up against Orange Glen, Justin Jordan scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, both individual season highs. Starters Jeff Fletcher and Billy Bloom combined for only eight points, but reserves Jeremy Burnell, David Gorman, Mark Aselstine and Tewaun Farris combined for 35 points as the Broncos got key minutes and performances from their bench, something RB will need come playoff time.
