Santa
Barbara Report: Saturday's Games
& A Word From Shantay--(February 2, 1998)
Santa Barbara/Ventura saw four games played on Saturday, including one between Dos Pueblos and Hueneme, which, from DP's perspective, had to be just painful in that they barely broke 50 points, and minimized the shot attempts. Dos Pueblos is a team which, although quite talented, has this year developed a history of having difficulty breaking out of the 60's when they are putting it up to the hoop fast and often, so a slow down, passing game might have insured a win, but it was also guaranteed to keep the scoring low. In addition to the DP game, there were three other games played, one more in the Channel League, one in the Tri-Valley League, and another in the Condor League all on Saturday night, January 30, 1998:
Dos Pueblos 50, Hueneme 41
The Dos Pueblos Chargers kept their Channel League record perfect with the victory at Hueneme. We're not quite sure about what prompted Phil Sherman's change of game plan midway through, but it might have been the slim one point lead DP held at the half. Here's DP's point guard, Shantay Legans' take on the game:
I don't have much to say about this game. I was told not to shoot and to pass the ball. Passing is one of the things I love to do, but why take away a fella's game? I had 4 or 5 shot attempts and 6 points, 9 assists. It was an easy game and the team could have had a fun time, but I am kinda blah about it. Why not play hard ALL the time and do your best? Hoefer had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Alex also had a good game.
Dos Pueblos, ranked sixth in the CIF Division 2-A, improved to 10-0 in league and 19-2 overall. Hueneme is 2-8 and 6-13. The Chargers held just a 20-19 lead at halftime."We did a little soul searching,'' Chargers coach Phil Sherman said of the halftime meeting. "And we pulled it out." Dos Pueblos moved ahead 31-28 at the end of the third quarter, then went on a 21-13 run in the fourth to pull away. Dan Hoefer led the Chargers with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Alex Jenkins added 13 point and grabbed six rebounds. And David Sears scored 12 points.``Sears made some key plays in the fourth quarter,'' said Sherman.
The scoring for Dos Pueblos was Legans 6, Sears 12, Holbrook 2, Jenkins 13, Hoefer 17.
For Hueneme, Collins had 17, including 4 three pointers, Norman 11, Williams 8, Ramirez 3, and Garcia 2.
Santa Barbara 64, Buena 51
"We didn't play our best tonight ... we were flat,'' Santa Barbara coach Jeff Lavender told the Santa Barbara News-Press after the game Saturday. "We struggled a little bit. We still won handily, but you always want to play your best." The Dons, who are now 7-3 in league and 14-8 overall, might not have been at their best against the Bulldogs, who are winless at 0-10 in league, but they still got some good play out of the squad. Sophomore guard Brent Williams scored all 14 of his points in the second half, J. R. Allen had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Tony Freeman scored 10 points and held Buena's top scorer Ryan Fay to eight points.
For Buena the scoring was Lorenzana 2, Fay 8, Probasco 6, Thomas 8, Blanks 4, Conway 8, Brown 5, Thompson 10. Santa Barbara was led by Ortiz with 15, Maloney 2, Freeman 13, Williams 14 including four three pointers, Christ 5, Allen 10, Kelley 5.
TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE
Carpinteria 60, Fillmore 52
Sophomore forward Chris Redfield scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace the Warriors to the Tri-Valley League win at Carpinteria. Redfield also held Mario Galvez to 12 points after the Flashes' high-scoring center had poured in 26 points in their previous meeting. Carpinteria junior guard John Barbieri added 18 points and grabbed six rebounds. And Tony Parra added 10 points and four assists. Carpinteria improved to 3-2 in league and 10-8 overall. Fillmore is 1-4 and 11-9.
CONDOR LEAGUE
Laguna Blanca 75, Thacher 53
The Owls (5-0, 14-4), ranked third in the CIF Division 5-A, blew the Condor League game open in the fourth quarter. The Owls tore through Thacher's press and scored 28 points in the final quarter. Jon Keith led a balanced scoring attack with 18 points and eight rebounds.
Thacher had seven three pointers in the losing effort, and the scoring was led by Holmes with 20 including 2 three-pointers before fouling out, followed by Harding with 7 including a three, Barkan 2, White 9, all made on three-pointers (3), Landsness 2, Fox 2, Warren 2, and Brown 9 including one three-point basket..
Laguna Blanca, had no three point shots, but still managed the win easily. The scorering was led by Keith with 18, followed by Wilson 2, Lewis 12, Tamas 11, Cochran 15,Niehaus 11, and Ferguson 6.
