Riverside Report: Three From Friday Night--(February 7, 1998)

Here's our report on three games played in the Riverside West Valley area on Friday night, two in the Skyline League, which features teams such as Banning, Beaumont, Notre Dame/Riverside, San Jacinto, West Valley and Yucca Valley, and a non league contest between Baptist Christian, which normally plays in the Victory League (Ambassador Christian, Baptist Christ./Hemet, Bethel Christ/ Riverside, Bloomington Christian, Christian San Bernardino, Desert Christian/B.D., and West Shores--although we have no idea where the water is at "West Shores"--it's a long way from the beach) against Murietta Calvary Chapel, which is a "freelance" school and does not play in a regular league.

Non-League

Baptist Christian 65, Murrieta Calvary Chapel 45

The Baptist Christian Warrior's hosted Murrieta Calvary Chapel Friday night in a non-league game which they won 65-45. The win improved the Warriors to 11-5 for the season while CalChap dropped to 5-8. BC went on a 16-0 run to start the game on fine scoring from Barry Meisel and Noel Grammer, and at the end of the first quarter, BC led 30-6. In the second quarter, MCC picked it up a bit, as BC went cold, only scoring 9 points to MCC's 10 points, and at the half BC led 39-16.

In the third quarter, Meisel, with help from Justin Sadler, Ben Borders, and Ryan Halverson, got the Warriors back on track again, but MC was able to run off 14 points to BC's 17, and Baptist Christian led 56-30 at the end of the third. The fourth quarter was marred by fouls and a ton of free throws. For BC, Meisel led all scorers with 18 points while Grammer had 13, Sadler and Halvorson finished with 9 each. For MCC, Kris Cost was the high scorer with 16. The Warriors will play a Vicory League game next Tuesday againt Ambassador Christian at AC.

Skyline League

San Jacinto 88, Yucca Valley 71

Albert Aguilar dominated in the paint for 28 points and 15 rebounds as San Jacinto won their third straight Skyline League victory, 88-71, over visiting Yucca Valley, Friday. The Trojans had no answer for Aguilar's great rebounding and shot blocking. San Jacinto dominated from the perimeter as well, hitting eleven three-pointers, including a pair of threes made by reserve center Allen Jeglin who came off the bench in the first half. Following an early scoring run by Yucca Valley, Jeglin hit the first two of his shots, pulling San Jacinto to within 2, trailing 12-10 with 2:06 to play in the first half. Pete Murrieta then hit his first three, giving the Tigers the lead which they never relinquished. Murrieta hit another three-pointers, and the Aguilar hit a pair of free throws, giving SJ a 20-14 lead by the end of the first quarter. Yucca Valley managed to match them basket for basket during the second quarter, but then lost the momentum at the end of the half, and trailed 43-31 at the half. SJ picked up its defense going to a trapping, man to man pressure d, and then to a zone and during the final minutes of the half SJ prevented YV from getting a shot off. San Jacinto's defense continued to frustrate the Trojans in the second half, while the offense continued to bomb in the three-pointers. Pete Murrieta finished the night with 20 points, followed by Jeramie Duguid with 11 points and eight rebounds. Jeglin finished with 8 points in the game. John Norman of SJ finished with seven points, three boards, and four blocked shots. San Jacinto is now 5-3 in league play, and will play West Valley, which lost to Riverside Notre Dame, at 6:30 pm at West Valley.

Riverside Notre Dame 72, West Valley 60

West Valley High School's boys basketball team was looking to pull its second-straight upset in as many games, after defeating first place Beaumont last Tuesday, but couldn't do it as visiting Riverside Notre Dame won by 12. West Valley got into foul trouble early and often, and was also missing sophomore Chris Davis, a valuable post player. In addition, senior Jack Bartley was knocked out of the game shortly after halftime diving for a loose ball, opening a gash on his cheek when his face hit the floor, which required that the game be stopped. The WV Mustangs ran into serious foul trouble as Nick Collins and Shawn Kelly fouled out in the fourth quarter and Solomon Broadway picked up four fouls. After trailing 17-6 at the end of the first quarter, West Valley erupted in the second quarter by outscoring Notre Dame 25-17, but the Titans were able to hold a 34-31 halftime lead. In the third quarter, West Valley went on a 13-6 run to take a 44-40 lead with 3:53 left in the quarter, but that was their biggest lead for the rest of the game. The Titans just wore the Mustangs down and pulled back into the lead on a Pat Freeman free throw with 2:39 left in the quarter. Ruben Suarez led all West Valley scorers with 24 points, including three 3-pointers. Broadway finished with seven points. West Valley is now 3-5 in Skyline League play and 7-17 overall.
