O.C. Register: Orange County Writers Poll:
Top 10 O.C. Teams--(February 3, 1998)

Frankly, when we started publishing the "polls" we had no idea just how many there really were. Here's yet another, this one published by the Orange County Register, which they call the "Orange County Writers Poll", which we guess means David Osterman and Steve Fryer, both of whom are the most prominent Register writers. The poll pretends to be anonymous, but we know better. This one also identifies the league, gives an overall record, and then awards "points" to each team, sort of like the AP or UPI polls. We have just one question: Do Fryer and Osterman both have 25 points each when they vote? Take a look, and see if you agree or disagree with these picks. Again, these are just someone else's opinion, and really don't mean a thing. But since everybody wants to see the polls, we're just pleased to oblige. Here's this one:

No School League Record Points
1. Santa Margarita Sea View 21-0 50
2. Ocean View Golden West 16-4 43
3. Troy Freeway 17-3 35
4. Sonora Freeway 17-3 34
5. Magnolia Orange 17-3 31
6. Servite Golden West 16-5 20
7 Brea Olinda Orange 18-4 17
8 Tustin Golden West 17-5 15
9. Katella Empire 19-3 11
10. Villa Park Century 15-7 4
Others Pacifica Garden Grove 17-4 4
Others Trabuco Hills South Coast 13-9 4
Others Loara Empire 17-5 2
Others Bolsa Grande Garden Grove 17-5 1

Now this is a good, solid opinion poll. Not a losing team among the bunch. So again, we have to ask, what is up with the Pasadena Star-News? Why can't they come up with 10 teams in the area with overall winning records? Anyway, after all is said and done, what does this really mean, except a lot of exposure for a lot of good programs, which on any given day could probably all beat each other. Again, truly "mythical" rankings if you ask us.
