LA Times
& Daily News Polls:
Top 10 Teams--(February 10, 1998)
Ok, so finally a litle bit of sanity in the polls, although the Daily News is still a bit strange.
Remember that for the last several weeks, both the Times and Daily News agreed to disagree about the No. 1 pick. The Daily News had Simi moving up after losing to Newbury Park for the first time, while Chaminade moved down after beating Harvard-Westlake. We couldn't figure it out, and the Times obviously disagreed with the DN, and instead dropped Simi to No. 2 while elevating Chaminade to No. 1, even though Simi had beaten Chaminade in mid-December at the Simi Valley Tournament. Last week it was still the same.
But this week, apparently the Daily News has finally become a believer. Simi is gone from the top spot having lost to Newbury Park twice this year.
Taking a cue from our suggestions published last night, the Daily News finally dropped Simi to No. 4, while moving Newbury Park up to No. 3, San Fernando to No. 2 and Chaminade to No. 1 to make it a consensus No. 1 pick for the first time in about three weeks. And the Times also took a cue from our article yesterday about our predicted rankings, moving Newbury Park all the way up to No. 2 in the region.
The only thing that is wierd about the two polls, seeing them side-by-side, is that the DN poll has last week's records, while the Times is current.
Daily News changes: Moorpark, which was once ranked as high as No. 7 earlier in the season, and which dropped out last week, is back again at No. 10. North Hollywood, last week's No. 10 is gone to make room for Moorpark. There are some minor shufflings which are all self-explanatory.
Times Top 10 Changes: Santa Paula drops out, as do Antelope Valley and Cleveland to make room for Moorpark, La Canada and Taft. And Simi moves down to No. 4, while Newbury Park moves all the way to No. 2.

As we keep reminding everyone, these truly are mythical rankings. They actually mean nothing. And that's even more true if you compare who the stats leaders are in the region. Check out our brief report on Ruben Douglas and on the "Player of the Week" series where we detail the leading players. We may actually get around sometime to printing up all the stats and just dumping them online. Look for it soon.
