L.A. Times Valley/Ventura Player
Of The Week: Daniel Bobik--(February 3, 1998)

The LA Times didn't run much of a Prep Basketball section this week, at least they didn't in their usual Tuesday Prep Special. But the Valley and Ventura County Editions did feature a "Player of the Week" and this week it is Daniel Bobik of Newbury Park.

Bobik, who is bound for BYU after he completes his two-year Mormon mission, was the Mammonte League co-player of the year last season, is averaging 20.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 4.2 steals for Newbury Park (19-4, 10-0 in league play), which is ranked No.4 in the region by The Times.

He became the Panther's all-time scoring leader Friday against Channel Islands, giving him 1,268 points. He broke the previous record of 1,246 set by Kent Keyser from 1975-78.

Last week Bobik averaged 21 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and 5.5 steals in victories over Agoura and Channel Islands. He failed to score in the first quarter against Channel Islands, but ended up with 23 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals. "I wasn't worried," Bobik and his scoreless first quarter. "I knew I'd get my share of shots."

Congratulations to Dan Bobik, and to the rest of the Newbury Park High Team who make it all possible from SoCalHoops.

And while we're on the subject of "guys who make it possible", we want to send a special shout out and congratulation also to Brian Polen of Newbury Park, Bobik's teammate, and to Josh Glass (6'-0" Sr. PG) of Campbell-Hall. Both of these fine athletes were selected as the Maccabi Team Los Angeles 15-16 Outstanding Boys Basketball Players, and received honors and accolades this past Saturday night (as well as a couple of really big, heavy trophies). Polen is one of those quiet, strong guys, who just go out and get the job done, without attracting a lot of attention which they deserve. Glass plays the point at Campbell-Hall, and while the team overall has gotten wacked pretty good a couple of times already, by teams such as Crossroads, Glass is a player who could, if he was sought out, take his game to the next level, and plays a game similar to that of David Abramowitz of USDHS, with the same strong moves to the hole, and the same good lightening quick passes. Polen too is capable of taking his game up to the next level, and these two guys are certainly worth a look, and would make some college coach somewhere pretty happy.

Congratulations guys, from SoCalHoops.
