Report From Poway--(February 19, 1998)
Well, well, well. As the season winds down in the southern part of SoCal, we're finding more and more sources of information from the SD area. Here's a report from the Poway area on the north county teams. Consider it sort of a complementary report to Paul Smith's article on the playoff preview pairings and seedings.
Earlier in the year, second round league games against Orange Glen and Vista didn't look like they would decide the Palomar League champion. Although the games didn't guarantee Poway High's boys basketball team a championship, they went a long way in the standings. The Titans won both games and are tied for first place with Rancho Buena Vista with only one game to play. The final game for both teams is a tough one, with Poway hosting Rancho Bernardo and RBV taking on rival Vista.
Poway (19-7, 10-2) remained in first place last week thanks to 40 points from Joe Mann, 36 points from John Insley and 35 from Mark Nolte in a 86-62 win over Orange Glen and a 85-66 win over Vista. RBV kept pace with the Titans with a 91-69 rout of Mt. Carmel and a 64-54 win over RB (21-7, 9-3). Rei Rivera scored 24 points for the Broncos, but it wasn't enough as the Longhorns avenged an earlier loss to RB. C.J. Fellars led RBV with 48 points in the two games, while Aaron Abrams added 38. Mt. Carmel's John Pourmand scored 22 points in a losing effort against RBV, but the Sundevils recovered to get a 90-65 win over Orange Glen last Friday.
Pourmand again led the way with 18 points, as Jaime Morales and Tim Smith both chipped in with 16 points. With the win Mt. Carmel improved to 10-15, 4-8 in league, and still has an chance to make the playoffs. The Sundevils faced RB Wednesday (yesterday) and closes the regular season hosting San Marcos, Friday. Like Mt. Carmel, RB won their other game last week, defeating Fallbrook 54-45. Rivera scored 22 points, grabbed six rebounds and had two steals, while the rest of the starters combined for 32 points. While the Sundevils are still battling for their playoff lives, RB and Poway are only battling for seeding position. The winner of Friday's Titan-Bronco clash will likely end up with the higheer seed of the two teams. A RBV loss in the final two league games, could give the winner of the RB-PHS game a No. 1 seed in the CIF Division I playoffs, which get underway Tuesday, Feb. 24 with first-round games.
