Rio Hondo League
La Canada 83, Blair 53
Although La Canada High was without point guard Tim Chung for the second consecutive game, it still had Moore than enough against Blair High. As in 6-foot-7 center Matt Moore. The senior torched the Vikings for 27 first-half points on his way to a 34-point, 11-rebound game in an 83-53 rout in a Rio Hondo League boys' basketball game at Blair Wednesday.
At the pace Moore went in the first half, not only did it look like he would eclipse his season high of 41 points, but also the school record of 47 set by Jeff Lord during the 1989-90 season. "I really wasn't thinking about it, at least in the first half," Moore said. "I just tried to play my game. I wasn't too concerned about that."
Moore said that without Chung ~ who sprained his ankle against Temple City in a 69-50 La Canada loss on Jan. 23 ~ the Spartans (19-5, 6-1) have tried to raise all the facets of their game.
"At first, after the TC loss, it was kind of a psychological blow to us," he said. "But then we just realized that we have to pick up our game a little more." Spartan coach Tom Hofman said of his point guard, "He could have played tonight if things got rough, but, obviously, we didn't need him."
Without Chung, the Spartans ~ ranked second in the CIF Southern Section Division IIIAA poll ~ got their assists by committee, with Brian Stevens dishing out eight and Brian Hudes getting five. Blair (9-12, 3-4) saw its only lead with the game's initial basket, a 3-footer by Reggie Hooks. Moore tied the game with two free throws and then scored two baskets. Ian Sullivan ~ who scored 22 points ~ hit the first of his five 3-pointers and Moore added another basket as La Canada ran off the next 12 points with 3:23 left in the first quarter.
The Vikings fought back to trail, 18-12, at the end of the quarter, but Moore answered the bell to start the second quarter. He dominated the Vikings inside the paint, scoring the Spartans' first 15 points to give them a 33-16 lead, with the only answer from Blair being John Brown's two baskets. Moore hit eight of nine shots and one free throw for 17 points in the second quarter and a 39-22 Spartan lead at halftime. The Spartans hurt the Vikings from the outside in the third quarter, with Sullivan and Rob Kane combining for five 3-pointers. The last two from Sullivan gave La Canada a 64-34 lead going into the fourth.
Monrovia 765, South Pasadena 72
Allen Rawcliffe scored 22 oints with eight rebounds and Sean Frederick finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats, who remained a game off the pace in league and improved to 16-4 overall. Arnold Kott and Anthony Jefferson scored 16 points each for South Pasadena.
Temple City 71, San Marino 62
Eddie Copeland had an off night, but Josh Johnson came to the rescure with 31 points, including 7 three-pointers as Temple City remained only one game back behind La Canada in Rio Hondo League standings with the win over San Marino. Copeland picked up a technical in the third quarter and was benched for the rest of the game and finished with only 11 points. Ralph Becerra finished with 12 ponts and Jason Johnson had four points and seven assists for Temple City. Senior center Chris Arms scored 22 points for San Marino in the loss.
