Report: Last
Week in Review--(February 2, 1998)
During the past week we've reported on many of the teams, players and results of games from the various leagues in and around the Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley area. Each week on Friday, the Pasadena Herald-Tribune online publishes it's "week in review". Here's there report, written by By Vladimir Moraru, Sports Editor as published Friday, January 30, 1998. We've edited it only slightly to remove references to other sports, such as soccer and wrestling, and to correct a major and glaring error--in the Herald-Tribune's online version Pasadena, Muir, CV and Hoover are in the "Rio Hondo League"--wrong. They're in the Pacific League. Oh, well, if you want perfection you've got to come to SoCalHoops and no where else to find it. :-). Here's the report.
High Mid-Season Grades for Area Teams
With the winter season in basketball entering the second half, here are the area teams with the highest grades at mid-point.
Pacific League
In boys basketball, undefeated Muir sits atop the Pacific League with a two-game cushion over Pasadena, Crescenta Valley and Hoover, tied for second with 3-2 marks. With the exception of last Friday's game against crosstown rival Pasadena, won by seven points, the Mustangs have outscored the other league opponents by big margins, which they couldn't do in the recent past. With a deep pool of talent, coach Don Grant's team would probably go undefeated in league and should advance far in the playoffs.
Alpha League
Marshall is 5-0 in the Alpha League, after crushing previously undefeated Village Christian, 93-44, Tuesday night. Duarte has won two tough games, 63-61 against Azusa, and 61-55 against Bassett, and leads the Montview League with a 4-0 mark.
Rio Hondo League
The Rio Hondo League, where three teams shared the championship last season, has La Canada and Temple City tied for the lead at 4-1, following the Rams' victory over the Spartans by an unexpected big margin (19 points). That was only two days after Temple City had lost to South Pasadena 76-73 in overtime-probably the biggest upset of the season-and despite center Matt Moore's career high 41 points. If the Spartans are to win a record 12th straight title, they can't afford another loss. Last year CIF SS finalist Poly topped Rio Hondo Prep 56-53 and trails leader Chadwick in the Prep League, hoping to win the rematch and get a share of the title.
