McDonald's High School All American
Selections For 1998--(February 26, 1998)

Well, we're a little surprised.

We shouldn't be, but we are.

Remember the list of McDonald's nominees we published about the players nominated from the SoCal region? Here's the link to the preview article, and here's the link to the entire California list of nominees, in case you missed either story. You may recall from that article that the McDonald's selection committee, composed of many coaches, writers and other special folks. Remember all those SoCal nominees? Remember Tony Bland, David Bluthenthal, Brandon Granville, Albert Miller, Chris Williams all from Westchester? Remember David Hamilton, Reggie Howard, Deandre Moore, and Milton Riley from Compton? Remember Kevin Hanson, David Hatch, Matt Kiemle or Jason Martini of Ocean View? How about the rest of the guys from Arlington, Washington, North, Poly, USDHS? Remember all those other schools with only one or two players nominated, every one of them deserving of attention.

Well forget them.

According to the selection committee, the only player worthy of recognition as a McDonald All-American this year is Tayshaun Prince.

That's probably a correct selection, but the only one from the area?

Are they kidding?

The only other players from all of California were Ray Young and Joe Pryzbilla.

Hmmm. A heavy bias toward the east and the midwest? We don't know.

Actually there was one other Left Coaster, Richard Jefferson, of Moon Valley, Arizona, but that's about it.

Are they kidding?

And what is up with having players from Virginia in both the East and the West?

In any event, here's the list, together with the schools they've either committed to verbally or signed with. All these players are seniors, so there is no class designation.
