Southern Section LA Area Report:
Tuesday's Games--(February 4, 1998)

Here are the scores and highlights (and a few lowlights as well) from Tuesday's games played in and around the LA and Ventura County area on Tuesday. Unlike the Santa Barbara games which were all cancelled due to the storm, most of the LA area games were played as the rain slowed to a trickle yesterday afternoon and evening. Here are the ones that were played yesterday. In most instances we've got the details; for those few that we didn't get anything, at least we've got a line score, which is better than nothing:

Academy League

Downey Calvary Chapel 93, Orangewood Academy 88 (3OT)

Yes, you read that correctly: Triple overtime. Junior guard Davion Wade pumped in a season-high 37 points, including a tip-in at the end of regulation that forced the first overtime, as the host Grizzlies (12-9, 7-0) wore down the Spartans (14-6, 5-3). Jeff McInnis scored 20 points and Milton Pittman chipped in 19 points for Downey Calvary Chapel.

Almont League

Bell Gardens 64, Schurr 60
Keppel 60, Montebello 41
San Gabriel 48, Alhambra 45

Alpha League

LA Baptist 65, Kilpatrick 43

Frank Vasquez score 25 points, including 6 three-pointers for LA Baptist in the victory to pull LAB to 8-11 overall and 3-4 in league play. Kilpatrick dropped to 3-4 in league with the loss. Graham scored 13 for Kilpatrick, while Craig scored 11 for LAB and was the team's second highest scorer.

Camino Real League

Bell Jeff 67, St. Anthony 57

No details of this game were available from this game played yesterday. If we ever get word on what happened, we'll let you know. But judging from past performances, we're willing to bet that Ruben Douglas had well over 30 points, given the final score, and that Mike West probably had about 20, with the balance of the points probably distributed between Chris Jones and others.

Delphic League

Crossroads 86, Whitney 60

It was a bad day all around for the host Wildcats (7-16, 2-5), who trailed 45-27 at the half and watched leading scorer Ashley Rochester (23 ppg.) finish with just six points in a loss to the first-place Roadrunners (7-0 in league). D.J. Nieves scored 16 points and Eddie Kim contributed 13 points to pace Whitney.

Desert Mountain League

Desert Christian 75, Vasquez 67

Rindflesch scored 16 in the win for DC which trailed by 3 at the half, but which then oustcored Vasquez 19-10 in the fourth qaurter to come back for the win. Faquir scored 20 for Vasquez in the loss, while Panico added 15, and Gray hit for 18 points for Vasquez. Desert Christian improved to 5-9 overall and 2-6 in league, while Vasquez is only 3-13 on the season and 1-7 in league.

Foothill League

Valencia 66, Burroughs 65

Mark Sison's two free throws with 6.2 seconds left--his only points of the game--clinched a Foothill League victory for the Vikings (18-5, 5-2) at Valencia. Jerrohn Jordan scored 30 points for Valencia. Kevin Krouse scored 22 points, while reserve Glenn Adriatico scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half for Burroughs (14-9, 3-4).

Hart 55, Canyon 53

David Neill, known more for his passing in football, made six three-point shots en route to a 24-point performance that helped give Hart High a 55-53 victory Tuesday night at Canyon and kept the Indians atop the Foothill League boys' basketball standings. J.T. Stotts, who scored 19 points, made a three-point play with 37 seconds left to give the Indians a 55-50 lead. Canyon received a three-pointer from Mike Reardon with 25 seconds left to close to within 55-53. Canyon had three players with 10 each, Suarez, Ezell and Bryson, while Reardon and Estevez both had 9 in the losing effort. Hart improved to 15-8 overall and 6-1 in league play, while Canyon dropped to 10-13 overall and 2-5 in league.

Burbank 54, Saugus 47

Eric Rohwer had 12 points and 6 blocks while Holwahjian had 11 points for Burbank in the win at Burbank yesterday. Burbank is now 3-4 in league play and 6-13 overall, and they are still struggling after losing the promising McDonald's All-American nominee Juni Williams who is ineligible. Saugus dropped to 2-5 in league and 8-14 overall.

Frontier League

Santa Paula 48, Santa Clara 47

See the separate article on this one for details

Golden League

Antelope Valley 80, Littlerock 49

Josh Speaks scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half for host Antelope Valley (16-7, 6-1) in a Golden League game. Joe Manning scored 10, Matt Parm added 11 points and 8 assits, while Steve Edwards had 11 points for AV. Steve Brown also scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Roger Price had 9 points and 14 rebounds for the Antelopes as they dominated. No Littlerock player scored more than 9 points.

Heritage

South Bay Lutheran 85, LA Lutheran 71

John Valdes scored 22 points in the losing effort for LA Lutheran which dropped to 2-6 in Heritage League play, and 7-9 overall. Hockless scored 22 for South Bay, while Cugelvin added 20, and Startks had a game high 25.

High Desert League

Bishop 75, Paraclete 69

Glenn Jones had 17 points and Peter Cich scored 14 for Paraclete (4-13, 2-5) in a High Desert League game at Bishop. Paraclete tied the score late in the game, but fell behind when Josh Foster drew two technical fouls. Bishop made all six free throws.

Mission League

Chaminade 89, Alemany 56

We're actually a little bit sceptical as to whether this was a "late Monday" result, or was actually played Tuesday, and couldn't get any confirmation one way or the other, but since Chaminade is playing at Crespi tomorrow night, and then plays Harvard-Westlake on Friday, it was probably a Monday game. In either event, Chaminade just dominated this game, and is now 19-1 overall and 8-0 in league play and in sole possession of first in Mission League. Scott Long scored 21 points, while Justin Beach added another 20 for the Eagles. Justin Stewart hit for 12 points and had 6 steals. Scott Borchart must have had an off night as he only had 10 points. Cayce Cook scored 3 points, while Levy had 3, Nick Lawson had 3, Stine score 3, Chris Canoles had 2, Ryan Cichon scored 3, Mitchell had 3, Rodriguez scored 2, Mike Kokorowski score 4, and JJ Todd scored 1. Whew. . . we think that's actually the entire bench, maybe with the exception of one or two players. For Alemany, Valasquez scored 15, while Casey Clausen scored 14. Chaminade was never behind in this one, and immediately jumped out to a 27-13 first quarter lead and never looked back. The Eagles outscored Alemany 28-11 in the third quarter and 22-17 in the fourth as they cruised to the win. Alemany is 5-15 overall for the season and winless at 0-9 in league.

Crespi 74, St. Francis 67

This one we know was played Monday, but no matter. Crespi just continues to roll, and while their record is only 4-5 in league play, they are improving with every game. Blake Tibbetts score 13, while Moore had 12 and Casella had 12 for Crespi in the win. Richard Fields, the player most responsible for defeating Harvard-Westlake on Saturday nigth scored 18 points, while Johnson had 12 and Scranton had 15 for St. Francis in the losing effort. Both teams are .500 for the season overall, and St. Francis is 10-10, while Crespi is 11-11. Both teams are 4-5 in league, and are just a half game behind Harvard-Westlake which is still in third place at 4-4 even after the loss to Loyola Monday night.

Olympic League

Brethren Christian 66, Orange Lutheran 61

Senior forward Justin Miller hit five of six free throws down the stretch to seal the win as the Warriors (5-17, 1-6) won their first league game of the season, knocking off the host Lancers (11-9, 5-2). Miller and Lee Mamaradlo (four 3-pointers) finished with 19 points apiece for Brethren Christian.

Valley Christian 61, Whittier Christian 58

Brandon Fopma scored 12 of his 18 points in the first quarter for the Crusaders, who led by 10 at the half before sweating out a late run by the visiting Heralds (4-3 league). Erick Streelman led Valley Christian (10-10, 3-4) with 21 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Pacific League

Muir 65, Crescenta Valley 60

The Falcons (13-10, 3-4) rallied in the fourth quarter, cutting their deficit by seven, but fell in a Pacific League game at Crescenta Valley. Kean Mallory had 19 points for Crescenta Valley.

Hoover 70, Arcadia 57

Mark Hull had 23 points and nine rebounds while Narbeh Dolokhanian scored 14 for Hoover (15-7, 5-2) in a Pacific League game at Arcadia.
