City Section Report: Hamilton Loses to Uni--(February 25, 1998)
We got the following report from one of our friends and rather than wait, thought we'd put it up right away, especially for those who just can't wait for more details from the papers and boxscores. The letter is really a critique and just in case you think it's our opinion (good, bad or indifferent) it's not: We're just a conduit on this one. The opinions expressed are those of DyIppie (we've left off the rest of his e-mail address, because we're not sure that the owner of the id wants it released to the public. Anyway here's the piece:
In an amazing display of ineptitude , Hamilton lost at home to University High School by a score of 63-61. Hamilton's Coach displayed the ultimate in learning discipline by benching his three best players for the entire first quarter, for the transgression of being late to practice. His other top three players ended up being winded .. and the team as a whole never gained any kind of sync.
Hamilton also managed to miss the front end of three different one-and-one shots at the line in the fourth quarter. In a fitting tribute to Coach U, a player for Uni who had transferred because he no longer wanted to play for Hamilton, hit the winning free throws with only 9 seconds remaining on the clock. Felix Lang led Hamilton with 18 points in the last three quarters (he could not score in the first quarter as he did not play).
University scored all their points either on layups, free throws or 3 point shots, as Hamilton's spread defense either got backdoored or kicked back out for open three's the whole game. Even though Hamilton averaged at least 4 inches taller accross the whole team, they spread the court on defense and failed to pound the ball down low on offense, preferring Hamilton's usual style of passing a few times till someone goes one on one. Hamilton finished the game with all but one(or two) of their timeouts intact.
Believe it or not Hamilton has four seniors capable of playing D-2 (James DeLoach) to high D-1 (Felix Lang). University on the other hand , does not seemingly have a player who will play beyond high school.. A great team effort, and a good coaching job by University's coaching staff. Those of you who saw Hamilton in several summer tournaments that were coachedby James Deloach's father, saw a team that was clearly playing better last summer than they were at the end of the high school season .
