Santa
Barbara Action: Dos Pueblos
Clinches League Title--(February 7, 1998)
We've got two reports on this one, the first from the Santa Barbara News Press, and the second from our on the scene reporter, Shantay Legans. As Shantay describes it, he's right, the final seconds were a lot stranger than the paper tells it. Here are the reports. Oh yeah, Dos Pueblos won the game 68, Ventura 65, another squeaker for DP and coach Phil Sherman. Is he on high blood-pressure medication yet?
Here are the two accounts of the game. First the Santa Barbar News-Press, unedited and complete. This article also appears at their website, and we suggest you visit there early and often for news of Santa Barbara prep hoops, Westmont College action and USCB hoops. Here's their report of last night's game:
Ryan Holbrook hit a 3-pointer from the corner with less than five seconds remaining and Alex Jenkins followed it with two free throws to secure Dos Pueblos High's 68-65 victory over the Ventura basketball team Friday night.
The victory also secured the Chargers' second straight Channel League title. Dos Pueblos, ranked fifth in the CIF Division 2-A, remains undefeated in the Channel League at 12-0 and is 21-2 overall. But, for the sixth time in 12 league games, it came down to a single basket in the final seconds. In fact, it was Holbrook's second game-winning 3-pointer in 16 days. On Jan. 21 he hit one to beat Oxnard.``Out of the 12 games we've won eight have been decided in the final two mintues,'' said Chargers coach Phil Sherman. ``Our kids have some resolve. We make plays when they need to be made. I don't know if we have the best talent or the best coaches, but we make plays at the end of games and we win close games. Part of it is conditioning and part of it is we have some game kids."
Ventura (3-9, 6-17), took a 65-63 lead with 10 seconds remaining after making the first of a 1-and-1 free throw situation. But Ventura missed the second free throw and the Chargers got the rebound. They pushed it down court and Ventura fouled, putting the ball out of bounds with 8 seconds left. The Chargers called time out and set up a play. Holbrook, who had been struggling all night with his shot, made the 3-pointer from the corner and the Chargers led 66-65 with 3.8 seconds left.
Ventura called a time out, but the Cougars were out of them and a technical foul was called. Jenkins, who led all scorers with 22 points, made both free throws and the Chargers got the ball out of bounds and ran out the clock.``It was very improbable,'' said Sherman. ``Jenkins really kept us in the game. They double-teammed (center) Dan Hoefer and dared us to shoot outside. Up until Holbrook's 3-pointer, we had only made three outside shots."
Sherman credited sophomore Uthman Ray for ``solid minutes off the bench." Jenkins also had nine rebounds. ShanTay Legans added 19 points, six assists and five rebounds. Hoefer had seven rebounds and Holbrook grabbed six.
DOS PUEBLOS - Legans 19, Holbrook 10, Hoefer 11, Jenkins 22, Ray 4, Bruce 2.
VENTURA - Staniland 16, Pabst 11, Robinson 2, Ostic 18, Weaver 4, Peterson 6, Derfe 5, Sandus 3.
3-point goals-DP 4 (Legans 2, Holbrook 2), V 3 (Peterson 2, Derfe).
Total fouls-DP 17, V 15. Fouled out-None. Technical fouls-Ventura bench.
Now here's Shantay's eyewitness account, see which one you think tells the real story in this game:
We won and clinched the Channel League Championship with 2 games left because San Marcos lost to Oxnard. I read the newspaper report and it was a little more strange than that at the end - (it was amazing that we won - one more time) when Holbrook put in the 3 pointer for the winning basket there was only 1.8 seconds left on the clock and we were feeling pretty good - the next time I looked at the clock they had put 3.8 seconds on the clock. The reason the refs said is that they hadn't seen Ventura call the time out. Our little crowd of fans just went beserk. But then Ventura called another time out to plan what they were going to do with the EXTRA 2 seconds and that's when they got the tech. I think Ventura was just so excited they forgot they didn't have any time outs game over. Then Alex sank the free throws to ice it.
The clock sort of reminded me of the game in Cathedral City last year in the CIF semis when the timekeeper FORGOT to start the clock when we were up by 2 with 23 seconds remaining. And there were 3 refs in that game. They guessed at how much time was left, put on too much time and allowed them to shoot until they won - the buzzer not going off until their shot went in when clearly even the extra time had run off. But let me get back to the Ventura game.
Our outside shooting was HORRIBLE I had made 2 3's and Ryan had made 1 before his game winner - and our plan in passing to the wings so they could pass it inside wasn't working as it made for a LOT of turnovers. But did we change up - no - we just kept doing it over and over and over. I drove to the basket a few times and Alex also, but that was it - just 3 point attempts and jumpers.
Speaking of jumpers, Uthman Ray, his first game on Varsity drilled a couple, played good defense and even had a couple of steals. Way to go! Uthman! You're a winner! As for our defense they got through us like a hot knife in butter. I guess the guys didn't want to foul out not that anybody was in foul trouble but me. Alex played great and WHEN Hoefer got the ball inside he made it count. I got thrown on my butt (no foul) with 3 minutes to go and was sorta hobbling but stayed in the game. With 16 seconds left we were down 2 and then I then I brought it up the court and got it to Ryan. I had 19 points, 7 assists and 4 rebounds and 2 steals.
We play Santa Barbara Monday at their house and Oxnard at home on Wednesday to finish out league.
