Barbara Report: Dos
Pueblos v. Rio Mesa--(February 5, 1998)
Dos Pueblos 68, Rio Mesa 40
Last night the Dos Pueblos Chargers, led by Shantay Legans, routed Rio Mesa for their 20th victory this season. Four players scored in double figures as Dos Pueblos improved to 11-0 in Channel League and 20-2 overall. Dan Hoefer scored 13 points, Dave Sears and Alex Jenkins collected 12 apiece and ShanTay Legans added 11 in a balanced Charger scoring attack. "ShanTay was distributing the ball to everybody,'' DP coach Phil Sherman told the Santa Barbara News-Press. "He's not shooting and we need him to shoot more."
Sherman was happy to get point production from Sears, Jenkins and Hoefer. "Dave, Alex and Dan have become consistent scorers,'' he said. "We need that to go along with ShanTay's explosiveness." The Chargers took control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Spartans 17-6 to take a 28-16 halftime lead.
"The starters played only half the game,'' Sherman noted.
And that was the truth. We've heard it from the man himself, Shantay. Here's what he had to say about the game:
This game wasn't as close as the score shows. Coach took out the starters and put in the bench for 4 minutes in the 1st quarter and about 4 minutes in the 4th. When the starters, Hoefer, Jenkins, Sears, Holbrook and me went out with 4 minutes to go we had 65 points. It was a good time to get our senior bench some minutes as we had an easier time with Rio Mesa the second time around. We had 4 guys in double figures - I had 11 points, 10 assists, 4 steals and shot 4 for 6 from the field. I love it when the crowd oohs and ahs when I dime it to fellas. We play Ventura Friday if the rains don't wash out the road, then have Santa Barbara on Monday (who got smoked by San Marcos last night) and then our last home game against Oxnard Wednesday and then the playoffs. We are 11-0 in league.
Remember that Sherman a few games ago told Shantay not to shoot but to pass more (at least that's how we read what happened). So now Sherman says he needs Shantay to "shoot more". Yes he does. Go figure.
The final scoring figures were as follows: Rio Mesa: Huerta 5, Fowler 3, Liranzo 4, Coleman 7, Arreguin 3, Guerrero 13, Stevens 1, Vasquez 2, Marino 2. Dos Pueblos: Legans 11, Sears 12, Jenkins 12, Hoefer 13, Brooks 2, Yamada 1, Holbrook 3, Hickman 4, Bruce 7, O'Neal 3.
