Desert News: Another
Desert Mountain League Game--(February 3, 1998)
Have we got High Desert News for you. This one comes from Palmadale. On Friday, there was more than one game played in the Desert Mountain League, which runs all the way up and down the mid-section of the eastern Sierra range along U.S. Highway 395. In a game played in Palmdale on Friday night, the Lone Pine High boys basketball team had no problems dispensing with Desert Christian 73-65, and just blew the game open by outscoring Desert Christian 28-10 in the first quarter. From that point Lone Pine (which is right next to, and is the stopping off point for Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the lower 48 states) Coach Scott Kemp could substitute freely, and he did. "Everyone got to play for us," Kemp told the Ridgecrest News. "It was a pretty good win for us."
For the Lone Pine Eagles, who are now 7-9 overall and 4-2 in Desert Mountain League play, Josh Corona was the high scorer with a game-high 30 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Mito Cervantes added another 13 points and 11 assists.
The game was never really close. Lone Pine jumped out to a 28-11 first quarter lead. While Desert Christian managed to chip away two points by outscoring Lone Pine 12-10 in the second quarter, the Eagles still led 38 to 23 at the half. Desert Christian managed to steadily erode the lead again and in the third quarter outscored the Eagles 18-16, and at the end of the third the score was 54-41, Lone Pine leading. Even though Desert Christian again outscored Lone Pine 24-19 in the fourth, that still only managed to make up 5 points, and at the end Lone Pine still led by 8 for the 73-65 win.
The complete scoring for Lone Pine was Corona with 30, Cervantis 13, Vasquez 12, Stell 6, McDonough 4, Meylemans 4, and Lutze with 4. Desert Christian was led by Smith with 18, Parker 17, Rien-Flesh 15, Sespen 9, Casa-Grande 2, and Bowling with 4.
The teams will again matchup this coming Friday as the Eagles will host Desert Christian at Lone Pine.
And if the Desert Christian boys almost got lucky, the Desert Christian girls' team should reconsider whether it really wants to field a team. The score: Lone Pine Girls 65, Desert Christian 6.
That's right. You read that correctly.
6 points.
Oh well.
