Second Round I-AA and I-A Matchups--(February 22, 1998)
Let's get right to it:
Division I-AA:
Game 1, Region I:
Artesia v. El Toro
Artesia, which easily beat wild-card team Fountain Valley Artesia 71-42, will play host to El Toro which defeated Warren 59-53. Jason Kapono, Apolinar Fernandez, James Murdock, Jamal O'Quinn, and the rest should handle this one too, but Wulfmeyer and Archbold could make it difficult and might just pull it off.
Game 2, Region I:
Oxnard v. Eisenhower
Oxnard hosts Eisenhower, provided the roads in and out of Oxnard are passable tomorrow night. Eisenhower should handle this one, and it will be the toughest competition that Oxnard has faced this year. Trenell Eddings, Derrick Benjamin, and Paul Jourdain might prove to be just too much for Jeff Fouchey and Rick Hernandez, but if this game is played, given the weather, it should be one of the better games tomorrow.
Game 1, Region II:
Long Beach Poly v. Leuzinger
Long Beach Poly plays host to Leuzinger, and we'd have to give the edge to Poly, with Shelton Diggs, Wesley Stokes, Ricky Anderson, and the rest of the fellows playing better than they've played in a long time. and interesting game.
Game 2, Region II:
Capistrano Valley v. Ayala
Ayala's got, Jack May, Shane Unrein and Daniel Sherman among others, and if May is healthy, the Bulldogs might have an advantage, even though they'll be traveling to Capistrano Valley.
Game 1, Region III:
Etiwanda v. Redlands
Gary Colbert, Corey Landrum and Rudy Simpson will provide an exciting show against Redlands, and given the fact that neither team has to travel very far (this is virtually a league game for these two neighboring schools) we'd have to say that even though Redlands is at home, it's not much of a trek for Etiwanda.
Game 2, Region III:
Fontana v. Rancho Cucamonga
Fontana, playing at home has the edge here with Glen Summerall, Mike Judkins, Charles Moffett, and team-leading rebounder Gary Holmes. But if Darryl Pittman, Chris Spencer (who scored 20 points - eight during a 32-point second quarter for the Cougars on Friday night) and Donnie Furnald are hitting, Fontana might not make it to their expected showdown with Etiwanda this coming Friday night.
Game 1, Region IV:
Jordan v. Simi Valley
Jordan coach Ron Massey received a bit of good news when he found out his team, which plays in Division I-AA, would play host to fourth-seeded Simi Valley and standout junior center Rafael Berumen. Simi lost the coin toss and could be in real jeopardy of having it's season cut short tomorrow night. Rafael Berumen, Simi's 6'-9" center, has been bothered by an elbow injury, and the big question is what will the Michel brothers and Ian Boys' do against Travon Bryant, Darren Peterson, and the rest of the Jordan guys. Simi is at a decided disadvantage having to travel during the rain and play before a hostile crowd, not to mention having to play against a really good team.
Game 2, Region IV:
Diamond Bar v. Bellflower
This game pits the No. 2 and No. 3 regional seeds against each other in second round action. Diamond Bar features Joe Schey, Jason Arnold and Kevin Turner among others, and Bellflower features forwards Isaac Brooks and Cedric Lusk.
Division I-A
Game 1, Region I:
Glendora v. Murrieta Valley
Glendora, which is one of the top teams this year, and which beat Keppel 101-55 on Friday in the first round will host Murrieta Valley, which beat San Gorgonio in the first round 69-61.
Game 2, Region I:
Santa Barbara v. Valencia
Valencia, which beat Don Lugo 81-50, will play Santa Barbara, which defeated Arroyo by 30 points on Friday. The game will be at Santa Barbara, provided Valencia can get through on Highway 101 given the El Nino storms we've been having.
Game 1, Region II:
Edison v. Pacific
Jeff Harrell, Zack Killiak, and Daniel Nehrig have all been playing strong for Edison, and Pacific will be at a definite disadvantage playing away.
Game 2, Region II:
Canyon v. Hart
This will be a match made in heaven for those in the Valencia-Canyon Country-Santa Clarita area, as JT Stotts, Jerry Owens and the rest of the Hart crowd match up at Canyon against Mike Rearson, Jimmy Cox, Everett Bryson and the others. Hart probably has the more exciting shooters, but will be playing at Canyon so that might become a factor ultimately.
Game 1, Region III:
North Torrance v. Arlington
Arlington is playing at North Torrance, but we'd have to give the edge to Arlington, what with McDonald's All-American nominees Jesse Carson, James Jones and Jimmy Miggins.
Game 2, Region III:
San Clemente v. Mater Dei
We don't know how Gary McKnight keeps doing it, but his "beatable" team this year just keeps getting better and better, and the win against St. Patrick's of New Jersey, arguably at the time the No. 1 team in the nation, gave the young squad quite a boost. Look for Steve Scoggins, Henderson, and Mansell to have huge games coming off the win on Friday by 25 points over Damien. San Clemente will feature Brian George, promoted from the junior varsity, Mitch Pierce, filling in for injured starting point guard Oscar Montecinos (broken foot), and Semaj Johnson.
Game 1, Region IV:
Cajon v. Garey
Cajon, which defeated La Sierra 62-61 on Friday will play Garey, which defeated Palm Springs 84-62; Cajon won the coin toss and will host the game.
Game 2, Region IV:
Pasadena v. J.W. North
Pasadena, which beat Quartz Hill 81-67 on Friday will host J.W. North, which beat Centennial from Corona on Friday night 78-73 in an overtime win.
