Section Scores From Wednesday:
The 'Shaw Loses--(February 12, 1998)
Finally. All the scores from City Section play in one place. We actually managed to get them all, which is more than we can say for the Times or the Daily News (the latter doesn't even pretend to publish any but the Valley teams anyway). So what happened?
Whoa. Stop the presses. The mighty 'Shaw finally lost a game. We've got none of the details, no box, nothing, but we do have a line score. They were defeated by the Washington Prep Generals 86 -79. Seven points. We'll find out what this does to the league standings today, and fill everyone in. This truly is Westchester's year in City Section 4A.
What else happened? Taft pretty much secured the West Valley League title; Chatsworth continues to surprise, even as it beats bottom dweller Kennedy which remains winless in league at 0-9; Granada Hills is now 3-6 in league while ECR is also 3-6, and both teams are now tied for last in the North Valley. San Fernando wins over Birmingham, and that's no surprise for the No. 2 team in the region. Manual Arts pounds Uni, again no surprise. Fairfax beats Venice, and we wonder how Glenn McGowan did (where's our daily report?) Westchester proved that this is not the year for LA and Deon Green or Leroy Watson, hammering them into submission. Grant beats Canoga to maintain a one game lead in the East Valley as Gil Arenas hits for 24 points and Adir Levy gets punched in the nose after the game by a Canoga player, and is taken to the hospital; unlike the Brook Billings incident, we're certain the police will get involved in this one, as it occurred after the game and resulted in serious bodily injury. North Hollywood's Keron Wilkerson scores 33 points and the Huskies remain alive in the East Valley, and have a chance to tie with Grant if they win on Friday night at Grant. We'll be at that game.
And, miracle of miracles, Van Nuys finally wins one as David Gharkhanian scored his only points on a layup with 8 seconds remaining on the clock to give Van Nuys the win. They are now 1-8 in league, and 2-20 on the year, but hey, they won. Finally. Sylmar also won, as Jeremiah Turner is back with 16 points and 15 rebounds and four steals. Sylmar clinched the Mid Valley title with the win.
In the Southern Pacific Conference race, San Pedro moved to 3-6 as Rashaud Armstrong scored 24 points, 21 of them in the second and third quarters. Carson remains at 6-3 in league and 16-9 overall and they were paced by Allan Kordich with 23 points.
In Southeastern Conference play, South Gate's Ronald Johnson scored 24 points and had 18 rebounds, but couldn't pull off the win against the Fremont Pathfinders who remain at 15-0 and will win the Conference title.
