City
Section: Final Scores & Highlights
Before Playoff Pairings--(February 14, 1998)
Last night the final games in regular league were played in the LA City Section of CIF. We've already written about the Grant-North Hollywood game, so we won't repeat that again, except to say that NoHo won the game to take a share of the league title, as Gil Arenas was held to "only" 20 points. In any event, here are the rest of the scores from City Section play from Friday, January 13, 1998. We're missing only two (San Pedro v. Banning, and Crenshaw v. Dorsey), and of the former, we're not sure we really care if they don't care enough to call in their scores, and of the former, we'd be amazed if the 'Shaw lost, but then that's what we said when Washington stung them.
And speaking of Washington, they just keep on winning, defeating Gardena yesterday in a game which was closer than the Generals would have liked. And check out that Westchester v. Venice score: 130-62. Talk about pouring it on. More than doubling the score? Whoa. Here are some other details, mostly of Valley area games:
San Fernando 72, Granada Hills 63
Devin Montgomery and Mike Page each scored 20 for the Tigers (23-2, 10-0) in a North Valley League game. SF long ago won the league, and this one was just for fun and pride. Scott Neumann had 17 for GH, which is now 8-14 overall and 3-7 in league and probably played its last game on Friday.
Taft 66, Chatsworth 57
Harold Shevlin scored 19 points and Eric Alvarez had 12 to help Taft, which finished at 15-5 and 8-2 in regular season play to the win in the West Valley League. Brandyn Fisher had 8 points and 13 rebounds as well. Taft has now won four straight going into the playoffs. Richard Harrison scored 17 points for Chatsworth, and at 14-10 overall and 5-5 Chatsworth will probably get a bid as well.
Monroe 97, Canoga Park 94
Can you say NBA scoring. Damian Ritter hit 9 of 9 free throws and finished with 27 points and 11 assists for Monroe, which finished at 7-15 overall and 4-6 in league.
Sylmar 79, Van Nuys 54
TK Reed had 20 points, 12 rebounds 10 assists and six steals (four short of a quadruple-double), as Sylmar cruised. Poor Van Nuys, after winning last week for the first time, and with a record of 1-20 going into this game, they finally put themselves out of their misery. And we're predicting a short run for Sylmar in the playoffs as Bort Escoto's group will make an early exit. Sylmar is now 15-9 overall and 8-2 in league play. George Wrighster, who transferred from Buckley this season, had only 5 points, but did manage 11 rebounds. Hmmm, Buckley looks pretty good now, doesn't it?
Cleveland 84, Kennedy 69
Another mismatch game. Kent Dennis scored 23 points for Cleveland, which finishes at 16-9 overall and 6-4 in league. Brian Smith also scored 19 for Cleveland.
Anyway, here are the complete line scores from Friday, with the notable exception of the two we already mentioned, Crenshaw-Dorsey and San Pedro-Narbonne:
