CIF
Southern Section: SoCal Boys'
Basketball Coaches' Poll--(February 4, 1998)
The Daily News and the Orange County Register both purported to publish the Southern Section CIF Coaches Polls yesterday. However, in many instances there were wild variations between them in the same divisions. Somebody was off, and pretty badly. For example, the OC Register still listed Harvard-Westlake at No. 1 in Division III-A, and we know that that's just not possible. Or is it? The Daily News had them still showing at No. 8, but then the rankings also listed St. Francis, which beat H-W on Saturday, and so maybe the Daily News was right after all.
Well, even though we question the accuracy of the reporting of the CIF-SS polls, and more important, question what these "polls" really mean, every week, we'll bring you the CIF Southern Section coaches poll, even if we've got it entirely wrong. Don't blame us, blame the newspapers that we're getting this stuff from. Maybe we'll just have to speak to Dean Crowley ourselves, and insure that we get the proper poll each week as it's issued. Only about three more weeks to go anyway, so if you can hold out, eventually someone is bound to get it right.

Again, now that you've seen it, what does it really mean? We don't think it means a whole lot, especially since some of the Division IA teams have been beaten by Division IIAA teams, and Division IV-A teams are beating up on some Division V-A and V-AA teams. In fact, if you look at the composition of most leagues, you'll see that the Southern Section "divisions" really in most instances make no sense, and they certainly aren't determinative of a school's ability. But it's what we're stuck with, at least for now, and that's why just about everyone (well, at least the top three or four teams in most leagues) make the playoffs come the end of February and beginning of March. But these are still all very fine teams, some of which we've featured, and many of which we will before the season is out. Anyway, they're here at SoCalHoops. Because you asked.
