Southern Section 1998 Playoff Pairings,
Division V-AA--(February 15, 1998)

Here are the Division V-AA pairings and the championship brackets. We got this from the CIF, so we know it's official.

An * indicates the Home team; # indicates the seed within the regional bracket. We'll try to keep filling this in as results become available during the playoffs. There are some notes from the CIF Committee responsible for these brackets, which should be carefully read before relying upon them as final (see below), especially before you drive across town to go see one of these games. Just as we've been telling you all year, if you rely on these before calling the school or checking other sources (such as a newspaper the day of the event) you do so at your own risk.

Overall in the Division V-AA bracket, the No. 1 Seed is Montclair Prep; No. 2 Chadwick; No. 3. Bishop Diego; and No. 4 Pacific Hills. Each of these top four seeds has been placed into a "region" with other teams. There are also 8 "wild card" games, all of which will be played on Wednesday February 18 prior to the "first round" games. See the chart below for the Wild Card spots and games.

In any event, it's hard to see any team besides Montclair coming out of this one on top, although there are some other really strong teams, like Boys Republic. We also like Chadwick and Avalon, a team which won a coin flip with Buckley to get to the playoffs, after splitting a pair of games this past weekend with the Griffins. And we really like the Yeshiva v. Montclair matchup later in the Region I Here are the pairings.

And here's the standard print at the bottom of each bracket directly from the CIF:

"This draw sheet was made based upon information available to the CIF-SS as of 2-15-98. We reserve the right to adjust the draw sheet as a result of information which would update any final league standings. Please note: Teams receiving a Bye in the First round shall be the host team in the next round of the playoffs. All games with the exception of the final round will start at 7:30 p.m. unless another time is mutually agreed upon and clearance received from the CIF-SS Office. Public coin flips will be held in the lobby of the CIF-SS Office at 9:00 a.m. the day following each playoff game. Coin flips will be available after 9:30 a.m. "

We've left off the rest of the announcement because it's really only intended for the teams to call in their scores and for the media, but you get the idea. This draw sheet can be changed anytime the CIF wants to prior to the start of the games, but chances are, other than a change in time for a game, you won't see these change very much at all. Again, please, please, please, check your local paper, and/or call a school before you make a trip for a game, because it might be rescheduled, and we can't be responsible if you make a long drive. If you do without first checking, don't come crying to us about it. We told you so.
