SoCal High School & Prep Report

Southern Section 1998 Playoff Pairings,
Division II-A--(February 15, 1998)

We just got this from the CIF, so we know it's official. * indicates the Home team; # indicates the seed within the regional bracket. We'll try to keep filling this in as results become available during the playoffs. There are some notes from the CIF Committee responsible for these brackets, which should be carefully read before relying upon them as final (see below), especially before you drive across town to go see one of these games. Just as we've been telling you all year, if you rely on these before calling the school or checking other sources (such as a newspaper the day of the event) you do so at your own risk. Note also that there are no wild card games in this Division.

Overall in the Division II-A bracket, the No. 1 Seed is Dominguez; No. 2 Redondo Union ; No. 3. Cathedral City; and No. 4 Paso Robles. Each of these top four seeds has been placed into a "region" with other teams according to their overall seeding, with the top four overall seeds being the No. 1 team in their respective regions.

This might just be the most interesting Division of any in SoCal this year. Dominguez looks like they'll get a fairly easy ride until the Quarter-Finals when we're betting they'll see Jeffrey Berokoff and his Sonora crew. Redondo Union we think will advance in the Region II bracket without much difficulty (remember, never, never, ever say "Piece of cake"). Cathedral City in Region III could be challenged in the Quarters by Perris, one of our personal favorites, and in the Region IV bracket, it's really a "you-pick-em" situation: Dos Pueblos will likely beat Agoura, but will then probably meet up with Newbury Park, which will probably survive their first round with Atascadero. DP and NP are two of our favorite teams, and it's a shame that one of them will have to go out in the Second Round. The top half of the Region IV bracket doesn't look too tough, but then we really haven't seen many of these teams with the exception of Burroughs and Temple City, and in our view, NP or DP could well take the region and end up seeing Dominguez or Sonora (we're betting Dominguez) in the Semifinals. We'd be absolutely astounded if Dominguez didn't take this Division this year, but then remember: Never, never, ever say "Piece of cake."

And here's the standard print at the bottom of each bracket directly from the CIF:

"This draw sheet was made based upon information available to the CIF-SS as of 2-15-98. We reserve the right to adjust the draw sheet as a result of information which would update any final league standings. Please note: Teams receiving a Bye in the First round shall be the host team in the next round of the playoffs. All games with the exception of the final round will start at 7:30 p.m. unless another time is mutually agreed upon and clearance received from the CIF-SS Office. Public coin flips will be held in the lobby of the CIF-SS Office at 9:00 a.m. the day following each playoff game. Coin flips will be available after 9:30 a.m. "

We've left off the rest of the announcement because it's really only intended for the teams to call in their scores and for the media, but you get the idea. This draw sheet can be changed anytime the CIF wants to prior to the start of the games, but chances are, other than a change in time for a game, you won't see these change very much at all. Again, please, please, please, check your local paper, and/or call a school before you make a trip for a game, because it might be rescheduled, and we can't be responsible if you make a long drive. If you do without first checking, don't come crying to us about it. We told you so.
