Players of
the Week: Daniel Bobik
& Kent Dennis--(February 10, 1998)
Well, actually only Bobik, a senior guard/forward who has signed to play at BYU, is really a "player of the week" as designated by the Daily News. The Times this week (at least through today) didn't have a Player of the Week in basketball--this week's "Athlete of the Week" was a soccer player for Poly (David Estrada)-- but the Times did feature a really nice picture of Kent Dennis of Cleveland, a junior guard who transferred from Bell-Jeff and who is averaging 20.3 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, 4.6 assits and 2.9 steals per game, to rank right up there with the leaders in each stat category. Oh yeah, they also had a picture of Keith Donahue of Moorpark, a senior guard who is averaging 17.9 points, 6.3 assists and 2.8 steals, which ranks him "up there" in most categories.
The real "player of the week" though was Bobik, who led the Panthers last week to an upset victory over Simi Valley for the second time this year, as he scored 28 points, pulled down 12 boards and had 8 steals. Bobik has had a great year, and he's averaging 20.3 points per game, 8.3 rebounds per game and 5.8 assits, and is up in the regional stats leaders.
As we told you earlier, the main scoring leaders in Southern Section and City in the Valley region are, respectively, Ruben Douglas and Gilbert Arenas. In rebounds it's Matt Boylan of Westmark who is averaging 17.4 rebounds per game while in City Section it's Tyrone Purnell of San Fernando who is averaging 10.1 per game. And while Ruben's scoring average is back up but the rest of his stats are somewhat down (he's no longer the leader in any category but scoring), Gilbert seems to be on the rise. He leads in Scoring, is 5th in Rebounds with 8.9 per game, is second in assists at 5.8 per game--which tells you that in addition to scoring, he's doing his share of creating for others-- and he also is first in steals at 4.4 per game.
If you get a chance, Gilbert and Grant are playing tomorrow at Canoga Park, always a dangerous venue for the Lancers. If you miss that one, be sure not to miss Grant's last regular season game on Friday at Grant. It'll be for the league title showdown with North Hollywood at 7:00 pm.
