Report From Friday--(February 24, 1998)
In preparation for the beginning of the playoffs in Central Section Bakersfield, here's a report from Friday's Games.
Central Sierra League
Valley 70, Bakersfield Chr. 47
At Cal State Bakersfield, Jon Van Dyke and Rodney Johnson scored 26 and 25 points, respectively, to lead Valley. The Lions clinched the Central Sierra League title with the win. Valley opens the Division V playoffs Wednesday at home against Alpaugh. Matt Ward led Bakersfield Christian with 18 points.
Southeast Yosemite League
Highland 72, Foothill 48
Charles Wiley scored 14 points to lead Highland in the SEYL finale. The Scots took advantage of eight third quarter turnovers by Foothill to outscore the Trojans 16-6 in the period. Highland opens the Division II playoffs next Friday at home against the winner of Wednesday's game between Foothill and Reedley.
West 62, North 54
Deshon Jackson scored 18 points to lead the West High boys basketball team to a 62-54 victory at North Friday night which wrapped up the outright Southwest Yosemite League championship. Chris Jackson scored 10 points for the Vikings, who finished 6-2 in the SWYL. Centennial and South both finished 5-3. West opens the Central Section Division I playoffs Wednesday at home against Bullard. Tim Hatton scored 20 points to lead North (0-8 SWYL), which opens the Division II playoffs at Arvin Wednesday.
Bakersfield 73, Arvin 44
Al Williams scored 18 points and Nick Thomas added 15 as the Drillers closed out a perfect 8-0 season in the Southeast Yosemite League. Up next for BHS is the Central Section Division I playoffs. BHS will play host to either Madera or Delano in a first-round game Wednesday. Madera and Delano play Monday in an outbracket playoff game. Desi Botello scored 20 points to lead Arvin (1-7 SEYL), which hosts North Wednesday to open the Division II playoffs.
Southwest Yosemite League
Centennial 58, Stockdale 38
At Centennial, Clint Mills scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Golden Hawks to the SWYL victory. Chris Jaime added 13 points for Centennial, which led wire-to-wire. Brian Rash scored 13 points for the Mustangs. Up next for Centennial is a Division I playoff game Wednesday at Hoover. Stockdale opens Division I play Monday at home in an outbracket game against Redwood.
Non-League
East 73, South 68
At South, Marguese Jingles had 21 points including five three-pointers, to lead the Blades to the non-league victory. Kevin Kizzy led South with 22 points. East opens the Division II playoffs next Friday at home against Lemoore. South opens in Division I Wednesday at Hanford.
