Report:Final Scores & Highlights
Before Playoff Pairings--(February 14, 1998)
Last night's games were NOT the last games in the Bakersfield and southern portions of the Central Valley, i.e., the northern environs of the SoCal area. While last night was "senior" night, there are apparently some regular league games scheduled through this coming Tuesday, and then presumably, playoffs will start just as they do in Southern and LA City Sections. Anyway here's a selection of games and highlights from last night.
SOUTHWEST YOSEMITE LEAGUE
West High 79, Centennial 74
Chris Jackson scored 25 points and Rusty Dahl added 22 as the West High boys basketball team won a key Southwest Yosemite League showdown with Centennial, 79-74, at West Friday night. West (16-8, 4-2 SWYL) is now tied with Stockdale (4-2) for first place in the SWYL. Centennial (4-3 SWYL) dropped into a second-place tie with South. Warren Sumlin added 13 points for West, which took control by outscoring Centennial 25-11 in the second quarter. Then West held off a Centennial charge sparked by Clint Mills, who scored 14 of his 26 points in the third quarter. Centennial's Brett Lantz led the Hawks with 28 points, nine of them in that third quarter. Dahl had a big scoring night, hitting five of West's eight 3-pointers. ``We knew they were going to clamp down on Chris Jackson because that's what everyone's been doing,'' West coach Vince Ludd said. ``That left Dahl open and he got hot.''
South 53, Stockdale 47
At Stockdale, Kevin Kizzy had 17 points and Myree Bowden turned in an all-around solid performance for South with 13 points, 10 rebounds, four steal and four assists. Britt Beal and James Johnson each had 12 points for Stockdale.
SOUTHEAST YOSEMITE LEAGUE
Bakersfield 74, Foothill 52
At Bakersfield, Terrence Dunn scored 19 points to lead the Drillers (20-4, 6-0 Southeast Yosemite League). Nick Thomas and Kevin McKinney each scored 13 points. Ray Martinez and Arnold Walton scored 19 and 11 points, respectively, for the Trojans.
