Report From Friday:
Some High Desert Stuff Too--(February 7, 1998)
The southern San Joaquin Valley, aka the Central Valley and the Tehachipi area of California, and the eastern deserts out to about Lone Pine and Ridgecrest is about as far north as we're willing to go. But we'll go there to see hoops action and bring you results. We didn't get up there yesterday, but we do have some games to report about. Here are the area highlights and scores from last night:
High Desert League
Rosamond 59, Mojave 43
Leroy Jackson scored 20 points and Ian Allred added 11 as Rosamond clinched at least a share of the High Desert League title in a game played at Rosamond Friday night. For Mojave, Kenny Johnson scored 15 points.
South Sequoia League
Garces 61, Ridgeview 52
Josh Atkins and Ryan Fox each scored 16 points as the Garces High boys basketball team defeated Ridgeview 61-52 in a South Sequoia League game Friday night at Ridgeview. The Rams outscored the Wolf Pack 21-9 in the first quarter to take control early and then hit 16-of-19 shots from within the three-point arc to secure the victory. Ricky Montoya paced the Rams under the boards with 10 rebounds. Torey Harper led Ridgeview with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Garces coach Gino Lacava collected his 100th career victory.
Shafter 57, Taft 45
John Wiebe scored 15 points and Beto Leyva added nine points to lead Shafter to the South Sequoia League victory played at Shafter Friday night. Jeremy Salcido led Taft with 16 points and Ryan Pollard added 14.
Southeast Yosemite League
Foothill 61, Arvin 55
At Foothill, Myron Hurd scored nine of his team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Trojans to the SEYL victory. Jason West added eight of his 13 points in the fourth quarter for Foothill (4-18, 1-4 SEYL). For Arvin, Desi Botello had 20 points and Ernie Cantu added 13 points.
Centennial 68, North 57
At Centennial, Brett Lantz scored 25 points to pace the Golden Hawks to a foul-marred victory. A total of 43 fouls were called, including 23 on North. The heavy amount of foul calls kept either team from getting into an offensive flow. Tim Hatton scored 22 in a losing effort for the Stars.
Southwest Yosemite League
South 67, West 60
At South, Kevin Kizzy scored 20 points to lead the Rebels to the SWYL victory. Rusty Dahl scored 15 to lead West. The big difference between the last showdown between the pair was that South shut down West's outside threat, Chris Jackson, who hit five three pointers in that first meeting. He had no three pointers Friday, however. South's Cedrick Dixon started at point guard in place of regular starter Glen Thomas, who was sidelined with asthma problems.
