Hoops: Report On
Games From Friday--(February 1, 1998)
We've said it before, and we'll say it again: Bakersfield is part of SoCal. It's clearly in the southern half of the state, and thus, while not truly part of the Santa Barbara-Ventura-LA-Orange County-San Diego megalopolis, it's still reasonably close, separated only by some mountains, and a little bit of highway. Here are the games from Friday from Bakersfield:
SOUTHWEST YOSEMITE LEAGUE
Stockdale 62, West 59
The Stockdale High boys basketball team sank eight-of-10 free throws in two overtime periods to spark a come-from-behind, 62-59 victory over West Friday night in a game that propelled Stockdale into sole possession of first place in the Southwest Yosemite League. The Mustangs (3-0 SWYL) rallied in the fourth quarter by outscoring West (2-1) 16-8 to force overtime. Stockdale's James Johnson, who had a game-high 21 points, nearly hit a last-second, game-winning shot at the end of regulation, but the timekeeper ruled that the clock had expired, according to West coach Vince Ludd. Brian Rash added 13 points and Bryson Gholston scored 10 for Stockdale. West, 14-7 overall, had 11-point games by Rusty Dahl, DeShaun Jackson and Phillip Thompson.
South 61, North 56
At North, Kevin Kizzy scored 24 points to lead the Rebels to the Southwest Yosemite League victory. Tim Hatton led North with 18 points.
SOUTHEAST YOSEMITE LEAGUE
Bakersfield High 74, Highland 51
At Bakersfield High, the Drillers outscored Highland 49-19 in the second and third quarters to build a 30-point lead, and backups played the fourth quarter. Alfred Williams and Terrance Dunn had 12 and 11 points, respectively, for BHS (16-4, 3-0 SEYL). Highland's Ricky Shaw and Germaine Herring had 10 points apiece.
Garces 73, Shafter 56
At Garces, Ryan Fox had 22 points and nine rebounds and Josh Perez scored nine of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 10 rebounds to lead the Rams. Ricky Montoya had 14 points and nine rebounds for Garces, which erased a 16-12 deficit in the second quarter. Jordan Lewis scored 17 points, and Clay Watson and Beto Leyva scored 14 each for the Generals.
East 70, Arvin 53
Marques Jingles scored 24 points, including six three-pointers, to pace the Blades. Ernie Cantu scored 16 for Arvin.
