LA Times'
& Daily News Athletes
Of The Week--(February 17, 1998)
Tuesday is "Athlete of the Week" time and both the LA Times and the Daily News publish their selections. This week, the Times features Matt Moore of La Canada (whom we've already featured once before as the "athlete of the week", but who this week is joined by J.T. Stotts who was selected by the DN.
Moore (6'-7" Sr. C) led La Canada to its 11th consecutive Rio Hondo League championship with averages of 24.9 points and 8.6 rebounds. He holds the school record for career points with 1,567, eclipsing the old mark of 1,479 set by Chad Givens. La Canada is seeded third in the Southern Section Division III-AA playoffs, which begin Friday. Last week, Moore set a school record with 51 points in a 83-70 victory over Monrovia and followed it with 37 points and 12 rebounds in a 70-57 victory over Temple City that clinched the league title and avenged the Spartans' only league defeat.
The Daily News pick, J.T. Stotts, had alsmost as impressive a game with a career high of 42 points last week in a single game over Valencia in the league championship. Hart has had some pretty phenomenal shooting and scoring run. and it's nice to see such a fine young man get this award. Stotts also had 33 points, including seven in an overtime period, to lead the Hart Indians over the Vikings in their first meeting of the yhear. And as good as Stotts might be overall, he was himself even better in the rematch, and last week he shot an amazing 11 three point baskets.
Yessiree, when the hot hand is working, it'll probably belong to Matt Moore or J. T. Stotts.
Congratulations to both of them on their respective honors in being named the Athletes of the Week.
