Southern Section Playoffs: All The Rest Of
Tonight's Games--(February 27, 1998)

No time to do the rest of the profiles, but at least we have the schedules for the other divisions. All the games are listed and the news is there. Don't miss them. That's right. You. Get up. Don't just sit there, go see a game. Before it's too late.

Division IV-AA Semifinals

Game 1: Twentynine Palms v. Santa Maria St. Joseph

29 Palms beat Beaumont on Tuesday and Santa Maria St. Joes beat Duarte in a squeaker. Should be a great game

Game 2: Calvary Chapel v. Pasadena Marshall at Estancia

Marshall easily beat La Salle on Tuesday to advance, and Joe Ortiz of Calvary Chapel scored 23 points on Tuesday to cruise to a win over Laguna Beach, which probably had other things on its mind following the devastating mudslides which occurred the day before on Monday and that Tuesday morning before the game. We don't know enough about either of these teams to really say much, but they both appear to have good shooting guards and quickness.

Division IV-A Semifinals

Game 1: Verbum Dei v. Crossroads at West LA College

Crossroads and VD. . hmmm. Crossroads features some pretty fine talent, particularly I Isaiah Fox (6'-9" Fr. C 255 lbs.), Felipe Williams (6'-3" Soph SG/F 190 lbs.), Mischa Taylor (6'-5" Jr. F/PF), and Kristofer Lofgren (6'-2" Fr. F). Verbum Dei is a surprisingly strong team this year and features Eric Moses (5'-8" Sr PG), Lawrence Diggs (6'-2" Jr SG), Larry Davenport (6'-4" Jr SF/PF) and Dalron Johnson (6'-8" Jr F/C).

Game 2: Bell-Jeff v. Serra at Harbor College

Bell-Jeff is now more than just Ruben Douglas and Mike West. There's also Patrick Thornell, Sean Doyl, Peter Swing and Chris Equia, who have all come on as the season has progressed. While the Guards were supposed to be a lock for the Division Championship before the season started, they lost four players out of the top six to transfers. But Bell-Jeff, at 18-12, is now the No. 3-seeded team in Division IV-A, and will advance to its first section title game since 1988 with a victory over No. 2 Serra (21-8) in a semifinal at L.A. Harbor College tonight. The last time the Guards were in a final, in 1988 title, they lost to Beaumont's Scott Haskins who scored 58 points in a 80-66 victory; this time though the only player likely to score that many points would be Ruben Douglas. Serra won the Del Rey League this year.

Division V-AA Quarterfinals

Region I--Played Thursday 2/26/98--Montclair Prep 65, Yeshiva 45

Region II-- Chadwick at St. Anthony

Chadwick (14-14) led by 14 after one quarter of Tuesday's second round win at Avalon. St. Anthony can't let the Dolphins jump in front that quickly tonight. The Saints (21-6) did storm back from a 20-point at Mary Star for a 74-67 second-round win. But coming back against the No. 2-seeded Dolphins could prove to be tougher. Chadwick, which lost to Montclair Prep, 49-47, in last year's quarterfinals, is led by guard Peter McCaslen, who had 26 against Avalon.

Region III--Santa Clara at Pilgrim

We don't really know anything about Pilgrim, but have been hearing that they are tough, fast and smart. We already know that Santa Clara is all those things, and more. You pick 'em.

Region IV--Pacific Hills at Pasadena Poly

Since Pacific Hills has no home gym, the Bruins played their first round game in San Pedro. Pacific Hills cruised to a 104-45 win over Glendale Academy on Saturday. The Bruins advanced to the quarterfinals with a 104-55 win over Boron on Tuesday at Daniel Murphy High School in Los Angeles. Pacific Hills (21-7) is competing at the 5AA level for the first time after winning the 5A crown in four of the past five years. Seniors Conrad Adamczak, Kamaal Davis and Charles Pagan are seeking their third straight title.

Division V-A Semifinals

Game 1: Rolling Hills Prep v. Price at Serra

Game 2: Laguna Blanca v. Rio Hondo Prep
