Section Playoffs: All The Division
IV-AA Scores & Highlights--(February 21, 1998)
Again, the high desert proves to be the most difficult to get information on, and all we've got on the Rosamond loss to Beaumont is a line score, but it's better than nothing. We delayed posting this to be certain we could get as much information as possible and to insure that it was correct. We hope it doesn't disappoint anyone.
So here's what happened last night in IV-AA Southern Section Playoff action. The #'s refer only to a teams seeding within it's own Regional Bracket within the Division. Overall in the Division IV-AA bracket, the No. 1 Seed is Twentynine Palms; No. 2 Calvary Chapel, Santa Ana; No. 3. Marshall; and No. 4 St. Joseph, Santa Maria, and all of the top seeds won their games, except Rosamond, which lost to Beaumont. Here's a look, region by region, at each game in order according to the bracketing:
Division IV-AA

The Twentynine Palms Wildcats overcame a tough night behind the arc with tenacious man to man halfcourt defense en route to defeating the Bishop Broncos 84-57. Game 2: # 3 Beaumont 73, # 2 Rosamond 68
We've only got a line score for this one, and it looks like it was a minor upset at Rosamond lost at home. Beaumont advances to the next round and will play Twentynine Palms.
Region II
Game 1: #1 Calvary Chapel 53, #4 El Segundo 39
Calvary Chapel improved to 21-6 with this win as Joe Ortiz scored a game high 22 ponts and Brett Yound added another 21 to lead the host Eagles over El Segundo which ends its season at 10-17. Timb Bker also grabbed 15 rebounds for Calvary Chapel, which will play Laguna Beach in the second round on Tuesday.
Game 2: #2 Laguna Beach 63, #3 St. Paul 58
B.J. Jamieson and Nick Reynolds led the host Artists, who improved to 17-10 overall, with 14 ponts each. St. Paul concludes it's season with a record of 14-13. Region III
Game 1: #1 Marshall 85, #4 Murphy 60
Deverion Mackey led all scorers with 21 points to go along with his 13 rebounds as the Eagles cruised into the second round. Marshall took a 15-0 lead to start the game. Murphy concludes its season with a record of 9-18, and with a record like that you have to wonder what the CIF seeding committee was thinking allowing them into post season play. During the fourth quarter the Eagles led by as many as 30, as Murphy struggled. Brian Holifield had 16 ponts and 12 rebounds and Aaron Taylor scored 11 points and had seven steals. Marshall, which improved to 19-5 overall will play La Salle on Tuesday.
Game 2: #2 LaSalle 54, #3 Crespi 52
Aki Aquino made a game-winning layup with six seconds to play at LaSalle. Crespi (12-14), which trailed most of the game, pulled even with 34 seconds to play on a 15-jump shot Blake Tibbetts. La Salle improved to 15-12 overall. Aquino finished with a game-high 22 points and had six steals while teammate Joe Williams finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Williams outrebounded Crespi's James Spratt 12-7 and as a team, the Lancers outrebounded Crespi 35-29. Coach Steve Goldstein's gotta be happy with this one. La Sall will play Marshall on Tuesday in second round action.
