Southern Section Playoffs: All The Division
III-AA Scores & Highlights--(February 21, 1998)

Again, the Riverside area comes up short on details. Fortunately this is a rather smallish Division, and there were only two games played in each regional bracket within the division. So until Riverside and Barstow come through, we'll just keep saying "we could only get a linescore" or "we don't have details on this one." And once again, we've delayed putting this up as long as we possibly could so that we'd have most, if not all of the scores and as many highlights as we could locate from both the newspapers and our many friends who report in the details.

So here's what happened last night in III-A Southern Section Playoff action. The #'s refer only to a teams seeding within it's own Regional Bracket within the Division. The No. 1 Seed is Ocean View; No. 2 Barstow; No. 3. La Canada;
and No. 4 Magnolia, and a
ll of the top seeds won their games, every single one of them. Here's a look, region by region, at each game in order according to the bracketing:

Division III-AA

Region I

Game 1: # 1 Ocean View 65, #4 Monrovia 42

After being held to just eight points in the first quarter, the Seahawks outscored the visiting Wildcats 57-33 the rest of the game. David Hatch scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead top-seeded Ocean View (22-4), which led 27-19 at the half. Garid Beeler added 12 points, including three three-pointers and Kevin Hanson scored 12 points. An eight point first quarter is exactly why we at SoCalHoops think that Magnolia just might be able to contain Ocean View if both make it to the finals. Ocean View will meet Bolsa Grande in the second round on Tuesday.

Game 2: # 2 Bolsa Grande 68, #3 Mayfair 61

Guard Duc Nguyen sank six 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 27 points as the host Matadors (21-6) pulled away for a first-round win over the Monsoons. Jeff Bonds led Mayfair (17-10) with 22 points. The win for BG set a school record for victories in a season. Nguyen's teammate Lamar Holloway had 19 points for Bolsa Grande. Bolsa Grande will play Ocean View in the second round.

Region II

Game 1: #1 Barstow 77, # 4 Silver Valley/Central Union 74

No details were available as we published these results. We're still hoping for some news from the Barstow area, and as soon as we get it, well let you know. Barstow and Notre Dame will meet on Tuesday in the second round.

Game 2: # 2 Riverside Notre Dame 56, # 3 La Quinta 52

Pat Freeman and C.J. Hollingsworth combined for 43 points to lead the Titans past the Aztecs. Ben Fredrickson led La Quinta with 23 points.

Region III

Game 1: #1 La Canada 73, #4 Pioneer 64

Matt Moore scored 12 of his game-high 26 points in the third quarter for host La Canada (23-5). Ian Sullivan scored 23 points, and Tim Chung had nine points and seven assists for La Canada.

Game 2: # 2 Lompoc 57, #3 Gladstone 42

Gladstone ended its season last night at 16-8) while Lompoc improved to 19-6 and advances to the second round to play La Canada on Tuesday.

Region IV

Game 1: #1 Magnolia 70, #4 Brawley 45

Zamior Bennem had a career night fort the host Sentinels who improved to 23-4 overall as they defeated the visiting Wildcats who conclude their season at 16-9. Along with his game high 30 points, he broke the career scoring record at Magnolia by scoring 1,317 ponts. The previous record was set by Mike Goff with 1,270 points in the 1984 through 88 seasons. Bennem also had four assists, giving him a season total of 161 to break yet another school record; the prior record was held by Gary Flood, with 157, in 1968-69. Teammate Eric McGhee added 16 points for Magnolia, which advances to the second round and will play Pomona on Tuesday.

Game 2: # 2 Pomona 73, #3 San Luis Obispo 58

Jerry Green scored 16 of his game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter as Pomona High School registered a 73-58 win over San Luis Obispo in the first round of the CIF Division 3AA playoffs. The Red Devils broke open a close game with defensive teamwork in the final eight minutes. Pomona (20-7) outscored the visitors 27-16 in the fourth quarter, thanks in part by three 3-pointers by Green. In addition to solid defense, the Red Devils also won the battle under the boards. Chris Lee picked off 16 missed shots to led Pomona, which held a 37-21 edge in rebounds. Shomari Sarpy scored 10 points and also had 10 rebounds. Pomona will face Anaheim Magnolia, a 70-45 winner over Brawley, in a second-round game at a site to be determined.
