Division III-AA

Quarterfinals

Region I

Ocean View 74, Bolsa Grande 55

Ocean View moved into the III-AA semifinals with its 74-55 victory over Bolsa Grande Tuesday at Fountain Valley High. But the Seahawks' 13th consecutive victory was anything but easy. It took a 25-point fourth quarter to outpace the Matadors, who refused to go away. Center Kevin Hanson had 20 points, and 13 rebounds. Ocean View (23-4), advances to play Pomona. Bolsa Grande, which got 18 points from Duc Nguyen, 14 from Jon James and 12 from Ryan Pham, finished the season at 21-7. Ocean View guard Casey Lawson was ill with the flu and sustained a cut above his eye, but still managed to score 14 points, as did Tony Dow, who also had seven rebounds; reserve senior forward Jason Martini had 10 points and five rebounds. Bolsa Grande trailed, 49-47, moments into the third quarter and had several opportunities to pull even. But Ocean View, which held a 51-19 advantage in rebounding, began to pull away with several key rebounds and baskets down the stretch by Hanson and Martini. Lawson, charged with defending the lightning-quick Duc Nguyen, contributed offensively with a basket for a 53-47 lead with six minutes 53 seconds left. Bolsa Grande's Ryan Pham scored, but the Seahawks got a three-point play from Hanson and Martini's bank shot for a nine-point lead. Bolsa Grande got a basket from James with 5:07 left, but Ocean View ran off the next six points for a 64-52 cushion with 3:57 to play.

Region II

C'mon, you guys in the desert can do better than this. How about Riverside. Let us all know what happened.

Region III

La Canada 69, Lompoc 66

Bryan Stevens had a triple-double that included the game-clinching basket and Matt Morre scored 40 points before fouling out with 2 1/2 minutes remaining for La Canada (24-5) in a quarterfinal game at Lompoc (19-7). Stevens had 10 points, 10 assists and 14 rebounds for the Spartans. He grabbed the rebound of a missed free throw with 11 seconds remaining and went the length of the court to provide the final margin. Stevens, a senior had a career high in both rebounds and assists, and with the triple double, including his three pointer in the final minute of the game, gave La Canada a three point advantage with was quickly countered by a Lompoc basket. But Stevens also scored the final points of the game on free throws after Lompoc missed a go-ahead basket with only 11 seconds remaining in the game. The Spartans led for most of the game, including a five-point lead when Moore picked up his fifth foul. Ian Sullivan added another 14 points for LC. Shadeed Salim scored 17 points for Lompoc.

Region IV

Pomona 98, Magnolia 84

Jerry Green scored 41 points for host Pomona (21-7), 13 coming in the fourth quarter. Magnolia trailed by one with five minutes remaining before Pomona pulled away. Point guard Zamiro Bennem scored 26 points for the Sentinels (23-5). Pomona (21-7) will go into Friday's semifinals against Huntington Beach Ocean View. The host team will be determined by coin flip at the CIF offices this morning. Senior leadership proved crucial for Pomona as 6'-9" junior center Shomari Sarpy got into early foul trouble. Senior forward Rashad Davis gave the Red Devils an inside presence, scoring 20 points off the bench, including 13 in the second half. Magnolia guard Zamiro Bennem scored a team-high 26 points but he couldn't hang with Green, who scored 26 points in the second half alone. Green hit 8 of 10 free throws in the second half. His three-point play with 4:49 left started Pomona on a 23-10 run to finish the game. Davis scored seven points in that stretch. Aaron Thomas added 21 points for Pomona, including four 3-pointers. Nine players scored for the Red Devils, whose depth wore on the Sentinels (23-5).

Division III-A

Quarterfinals

Region I

Chaminade 69, Colmpton Centennial 39

Scott Borchart of Chaminade High scored 21 points, making 9 of 10 free throws and all six of his shots, pulled down 13 rebounds and took his customary one charging foul as Chaminade (25-1) routed Centennial, 69-39, in a Southern Section Division III-A quarterfinal playoff game Tuesday night at Dominguez High.

Centennial (19-9) had earlier defeated such teams as San Fernando, Morningside and Crossroads this season. But Chaminade came out in a 2-3 zone defense to neutralize Centennial's interior penetration and quickness, and forced them to shoot from the perimeter. Chaminade outscored Centennial, 33-10, in the second and third quarters. With 6:39 left in the game, the Apaches trailed, 51-20, and they were dominated on the boards, and Justin Stewart finished with 14 rebounds and Long added 10 rebounds and 11 points. Centennial failed to score in the first 5 1/2 minutes of the third quarter after falling behind, 38-26, at halftime. The Apaches' top player, guard Arturo Jones, was scoreless until making a free throw with 6:30 left. Eight of Borchart's points came directly after offensive rebounds. Compton Centennial hit just 13 of 55 shots from the field and paid the price. The Apaches, who finished third in the Ocan League, took a 5-0 lead after a couple of steals and were still in front 10-7 after Alonzo Barber's three ponts shot with 3:08 to go in the firwt quarter put Centennial up 13-7. But Centennial's offense just withered after that.
