Quarter Final Results--(February 28, 1998)
Here's what happened last night in Division I-A. Glendora, the overall No. 1 seeded team, and the No. 1 seed in Region I, beat Valencia pretty handily, and will advance to the semifinal to meet J.W. North, the No. 2 seed in Region IV, which beat No. 4 Regional seed Garey. In the other semifinal matchup which will take place next week, San Bernadino's Pacific, the No. 1 Regional seed in Region II, beat Canyon of Valencia, and will matchup against Mater Dei, the No. 2 seeded team in the Region IV bracket. Here are the results from Friday night.
Division I-A Quarterfinals
Region I--Glendora 85, Valencia 62
Casey Jacobsen, a junior guard, scored 45 points as the top-seeded Tartans (28-1) blew past the Vikings at College of the Canyons. Jacobsen scored on dunks, jumpers in the lane, drives to the hole, and eight three point baskets. Jacobsen's brothers Brock and Adam played for Crescenta Valley, and then University of San Diego and Pacific. Jacobsen thus comes by his basketball pedigree honestly, and he may be the best of the three. He has now scored 100 points in his last two games, and last night he had 10 rebounds, and six assists, to go along with three steals. Leading by 17 at halftime, Glendora outscored the hosts 23-12 to grab a 68-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter. At one point the lead got to as much as 30 points during the second half. Jacobsen stole a pass with 5:18 to play in the third quarter and completed the play with a two handed dunk, to bring the score to 51-32, which meant that at that moment, Jacobsen had only one less point at 31 than the entire Valencia team. Chris and Chad Clark added 15 points apiece and Chris Clark also had eight rebounds. Jerrohn Jordan finished with 21 points for Valencia. Valencia finishes the season at 22-7, and it was not the only Foothill League team to lose, as Canyon also lost to Pacific. Glendora will play Garey in the semi-final.
Region II--Pacific 64, Canyon 59
Chris Smith scored 20 points, including five free throws in the last two minutes, and Pacific High held off Canyon, 64-59, Friday in a Southern Section Division I-A boys' basketball quarterfinal at Hart High. Canyon trailed, 5-0, after 2 1/2 minutes, then scored 14 unanswered points in the next 3:21. The Cowboys led, 14-8, after one quarter. The lead changed hands six times in the second quarter but Canyon held a 29-25 halftime advantage. Mike Hall opened the fourth quarter by drilling a three-point shot from the corner to give Pacific its biggest lead, 48-37. DeMond Huff, a 6'-9" center, blocked six shots for second-seeded Pacific (21-8), four of them in the fourth quarter, and had eight points and 12 rebounds. Jimmy Cox scored 22 points for Canyon (12-17) and made eight of 10 free throws. Jerreme Suarez added 16 points for the Cowboys, including a three-point basket that pulled them to within 62-59 with nine seconds remaining. Canyon, which finished last in the Foothill League and was considered the division's Cinderella team, was awarded an at-large postseason bid and upset Loyola and Hart en route to the quarterfinals. Justin Orefice, Canyon's leading scorer this season, scored all nine of his points in the first half. He went cold in the third quarter, when the Cowboys were outscored, 25-8. Canyon guard Everett Bryson, assigned to cover Pirate three-point shooter Bobby Tossetti, fouled out with 1:11 remaining and the Cowboys trailing, 59-51. However, Tossetti finished with two points.Pacific wil now advance to the semifinals and will meet Mater Dei, which defeated Arlington.
Region III--Mater Dei 71, Arlington 63
Steve Scoggin, a sophomore guard, scored 24 points and the Monarchs held off a late rally to defeat Arlington of Riverside, 71-63, at Ocean View High in a Division I-A quarterfinal game Friday night. Scoggin's 24 points, included four of seven from three-point range. Freshman guard Cedric Bozeman scored 15 points and sophomore forward Steve Henderson 13. The Monarchs (21-7) will play San Bernardino Pacific in the semifinals Tuesday. Arlington's Jimmy Miggins scored a game-high 26 points, 18 of those in the second half, for the Ivy League champions, who close out their season at 24-6. The Lions cut Mater Dei's lead to 62-58 with 1 minute 17 seconds remaining in the game with an 11-2 run. But Henderson's wide open layup beat Arlington's half-court trap and then Scoggin sank two free throws. The Monarchs benefited at the free-throw line, making 17 of 21 attempts. Arlington made two of three tries. Miggins averages 12 free throws a game, but he didn't get one attempt in the game. Mater Dei's strategy was to surround the 6-foot-7 Miggins with two or three defenders, led by Henderson, and force the Lions to shoot over them. Miggins took only five shots in the first half and made four, but his teammates were a combined three of 17. Mater Dei led, 32-15. Scoggin made three of his three-pointers in the third quarter and when Henderson scored with 1:21 left, Mater Dei held a 52-32 lead. The Monarchs opened the league season with a 12-7 record. Since then, Mater Dei is 9-0 and in the section semifinals, a spot it never thought it would be in at this time this year. The Monarchs' defense took control in the first half, holding the Lions to 8-for-22 shooting.
Region IV-- J.W. North 73, Garey 66
Garey beat Cajon 65-63 to advance to this game, upsetting the No. 4 seed in the second round. J.W. North beat Pasadena to make it here. On Friday night, only one team would survive. That team was J.W. North, which rallied from behind to beat Garey. James Taylor scored 22 points, eight in a one-minute span late in the fourth quarter. The loss eliminates the Vikings, who finish their season 19-10. The Huskies, who are 17-10, advance to Tuesday's semifinals to face Glendora, an 85-62 winner over Valencia in their quarterfinal game. Garey held a 58-52 advantage over North early in the final quarter, but a combination of cold shooting and turnovers allowed the Huskies to get back into the game. Raji Burnett's 3-pointer with 4:48 remaining put North ahead to stay at 61-59. The Vikings kept things close, pulling within 62-61 with less than two minutes remaining. But Taylor put together his late eight-point blitz as North opened a 72-66 advantage with 46 seconds remaining. Jesse Terrones scored 21 points, including six 3-pointers, to top Garey's offensive output. Trey Cobb added 13 points and 10 rebounds and Josh Long seven points and 10 assists.
