SoCal High School & Prep Report

Third Annual Vegas Prep Championship
26th - 30th of Dec.--(December 15, 1997)

It might be a little early to announce this one, and we don't want to confuse anybody, but there are two high school tournaments in Vegas, back to back. First, there is the 21st Annual Reebok Holiday Prep Classic from the 19th through December 23rd.

Then the following week is the Las Vegas Prep Championship, from December 26th through the 30th, featuring 32 teams, including 17 from California. It's a great chance to see some of our local talent from Serra, Bosco, Torrance, and others take on teams from around the west, including Fair Oaks Del Campo which features 6'-9" Matt Barnes, who we'll all be seeing a lot more of next year at UCLA.

Seventeen teams from from California are entered, including -- Blair, Chadwick, Corona, Del Campo, Duarte, El Molino, Garces Memorial, Hogan, Marina, Mira Costa, Mira Loma, Modesto Christian, Pacific Hills, St. John Bosco, Serra, West Torrance and Woodbridge. Catalina Foothills, Marana, Shadow Mountain and Washington from Arizona round out the field of teams from outside the Las Vegas area.

Eleven schools from Vegas will also participate in the event -- Chaparral, Cheyenne, Cimarron-Memorial, Clark, Durango, Eldorado, Rancho, Silverado, Valley, Western and the host Wildcats.

Games will be played at the main and auxiliary gyms at Las Vegas, and at Eldorado. Rancho opens play Dec. 26 vs. West Torrance at 2 p.m.; Western matches up 0with Mira Loma at 5 p.m.; Cimarron meets Shadow Mountain at 6:30 p.m.; Las Vegas plays against Corona at 8 p.m. Those games will be in the main gym.

In the auxiliary gym, Cheyenne meets up with Serra at 2:10 p.m.; Durango faces Pacific Hills at 3;40 p.m.; Chaparral plays Marina at 5:10 p.m.; Silverado plays Del Campo at 9:40 p.m.

And at Eldorado, Clark plays St. John Bosco at 5 p.m.; Valley faces Blair at 6:30 p.m.; Eldorado hosts Hogan at 8 p.m.

The title game is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30.

This one may not be as prestigious as the Reebok Holiday Prep Classic, but it'll be good enough to convince a lot of people to stick around once the Reebok is finished. If you don't have reservations yet, you'll want to get them now because Vegas is a zoo during the holidays. Ok, well it's a zoo most of the time, but make your reservations anyway.
