Valencia Tournament Update: Crespi Wins--(December 16,1997)

Coach Dick Dornan finally got his first win of the season in the first round of the Valencia Tournament yesterday, as the Celts beat Quartz Hills 70-63. Blake Tibbets (6'-1" Jr. G) was the leading scorer for Crespi, with 17 points, and John Bird (6'-5" Jr. F) had 13. Robert Muller (6'-3" Jr. F) added 12 while Mirtis Ducksworth (6'-0" Sr. SG ) and Tim McDonough (6'-1" Jr. SG) both had 6 points. Pat Casella (5'-10" Soph. SG) only had 4 points in what must have been an off game from a scoring point of view, while Marcin Jagoda (6'-3" Jr. F) had three points. Jordan Johnson (6'-2" Soph. F 175 lbs.) and Ryan Moore (6'-0" Sr. SG 160 lbs.) also contributed 2 points apiece.

Crespi jumped out to an early first quarter lead by outscoring Quartz Hill by 11, and at the end of the quarter the score was 25-14. They took a comfortable lead into the half, increasing it by another 3, to lead by 14, outscoring QH 17-14. Quartz came out tough in the second half, but just not tough enough . Quartz Hill brought the game back to within 4 points late in the fourth quarter, but Rob Muller hit a key fall-away 10' j that broke QH's backs.

Quartz Hills scoring was led by Hebert with 16 points, Lett with 15, Tomlin with 13, Calrton had 10 points and Grimm had 5. Garcia and Winterlee both had two points each.

Coach Dornan said after the game "We've had some tough defeats, including two losses in overtime and a three-point loss to Canyon. But it was great to pull this one out. My kids kept their positive attitudes and realized that it was only a question of when, not if, we would get our first win." Crespi is now 1-4 on the season.

In other first round action at the Valencia Tournament:

Valencia just hammered Burroughs, 83-45. Valencia had 5 players scoring in double figures, including Jerrohn Jordan with 20. Others included Richardson with 13, McDaniel 14, Sison 11, Leon 12. Those scoring in single digits were Madjib, Otis and Pawlik each with two points, and Goodman with 7 points. Burroughs had a pretty unbalanced scoring attack, and only two players really did any damage: O'Neil with 18, and Montoya with 10. All other scorers were well below the double digit mark, as Valencia's defense and press proved to be far too strong for Burroughs. Others scoring for Burroughs included Pich with 4, Curtis with 6, Moffitt with 3, and Rollingson and Martin each with 2.

Burroughs never led this game, and they were consistently outscored, playing weak defense and largely ineffective inside and outside. By the end of the first quarter, Valencia only led by 3, 16-13, but then they broke it open in the second half, outscoring Burroughs 24-12. In the third, they outscored Burrough 19-11, and then just shut them down in the fourth, going on a 24-9 scoring spree. Burroughs is now 3-5 on the season, while Valencia improved to 7-1.

San Fernando also beat Santa Paula badly in the first round Monday, 71 to 48, and Mike Page and Luis De aLa Rosa each were the high scorers for San Fernando, with 16 and 15 points respectively. San Fernando is now 8-0. Devon Montgomery had somewhat of an "off" day, hitting only for 9. Others scoring for San Fernando were S. Atkins with 4, Bl. Atkins 5, Tubbs with 6, Kinlaw 6, and Purnell with 10.

Santa Paula was never in it. At the end of the first half SF had outscored them 24-10, and then outscored them 19-15 in the second quarter to lead by 43-25. They played fairly even in the third quarter, with SF only outscoring by a point (15-14), and in the fourth, San Fernando just cruised, shutting down Santa Paula 13-9, for the eventual 71-48 win. Santa Paula is now 5-3 for the year, while San Fernando remains undefeated after eight games.

Finally in the 6:00 game, which our correspondent didn't get to see or report on, Ventura beat Littlerock by 14 points 74-60.
